Chicago Booth EMBA vs TRIUM EMBA. For all of you hopefuls & Alumni of these Schools, Looking for Advice

I have been accepted by Booth & TRIUM for their EMBA programs.

Looking to hear stories from alumni and other hopefuls as to how they feel about these programs. Both in terms of market perception as to the quality and prestige of these programs as well as the underlying longer term career prospects/progression accorded by these programs.

Understandably, CB is a single school program whilst TRIUM is a 3 (NYU, LSE, HEC) school program, so I am not certain that it is a fair comparison to make. Graduates of the TRIUM program also join the TRIUM alumni network and also the 3 partner schools.

The program marketing for both schools have done a good job, but I wanted to hear from you guys instead.

1) Particularly for alumni of prestigious programs - how much do alumni really help each other out. I ask because if taken cumulatively, TRIUMs alumni is much larger than CB.

2) Can you provide specific examples of when such an alumni network connection provided you a head start on a business deal or a job opportunity?

3) Which school/program would have a higher predilection towards PE/VC/Corp Finance? - Again, the point to note here is that I am not looking for an entry position, rather a mid level position.

4) Which program would you feel would have the greatest positive economic impact?

I am currently in a healthcare / biotech company that may undergo an M&A in the near future. As such, while full-time-MBAs are usually ground zero for recruiters, I hope that my class cohort would be able to "put in a good word for me". The intent is to go sideways into a new sector, and then up the career ladder. On a best case = healthcare -> healthcare tech OR healthcare VC --> hedge.

I am aware that full time MBAs allow for a greater bond between the class cohort, but I am already in my mid 30's and closer to upper management. I therefore prefer to have a similar class cohort of upper management looking to break into C-suite (vs. the majority of those in the full time MBA program who are starting off in their career).

Much appreciated guys!

I would try to not do exec. First your sponsorship is a risk in any merging firms, second you don't have a back envelope. Third the blur of networks, because the majority of them are either too busy or can't find similarity, might not help to strengthen your network.

If you were to do it, Chicago is better that you may be locked up in a single cohort and have at least a very small but loyal classmates

Hey. Thanks for the response. Firstly, the sponsorship is not at risk, I have gotten the company to pay me the entire amount of fees up front, for me to then disburse to the programme.

"Third the blur of networks, because the majority of them are either too busy or can't find similarity, might not help to strengthen your network." --> Would you mind elaborating a little bit more on this?

From your response, it seems that the prestige aspect of it is... minimal?

I can't really put a measure on that. It depends on these things, likely more factor:

  1. network loyalty in general
  2. your closeness to the program/alumni base/career advisors
  3. your industry
  4. geography

I think it'd be better if you evaluate them yourself since TRIUM has that kind of diversity as you know.

And I reiternate my last note, you're really high enough to do an Exec MBA, you're not so "build-able" like regular MBAs, so I wouldn't count as much on the EMBA to transition your careers. If it helps, great; if it doesn't, it's a second job to expand your network circles anyway!

I'd speak to TRIUM alums and see whether they really see value in the non-TRIUM networks for those schools. I'm willing to bet that they don't get nearly the same integration in the network as someone who attends one of the individual schools programs, regardless of what the marketing materials insinuate. Also, geography may play a role in your decision. If you're Midwest, Booth should win hands down; if you're in the EU, I'm guess TRIUM will edge; anywhere else it's probably a toss up or goes to Booth. This may or may not include NYC, depending on how TRIUM alums are viewed by NYU alums.
