Chicago Summer Analyst: how long of a commute is too long?
Will be spending the summer in Chicago as a summer analyst in IBD. Thinking of picking up an apartment a bit further away from the Loop--a 30 minute CTA ride each morning, 20 minute Uber ride back each night. Is this feasible, or should I look for a place that's closer?
Obviously cheaper the further you get from the loop… And there are fun areas 30 minutes away like WrigleyVille and Lincoln Park… but ftom what people have said On this site, it’s pretty key to live closer to your office than further.
That seems pretty far considering you could find a place up in Wrigleyville and still be ~20 minutes door to door (I wouldn't go much farther north than that). If this 30-minute commute involves taking a bus down lakeshore I would highly recommend you try to get a spot near an L stop instead. They look the same on paper but the buses can run slower than expected, often fill up, are less comfortable, and are less reliable. Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Wicker, and Wrigley all offer up some opportunities to balance value and a reasonable commute (as long as you are 1-2 blocks away from the L stop). Uber back home cruises without traffic at that time of night so I wouldn't worry about that.
