China Is Using AI and Facial Recognition To Fine Jaywalkers.. via Text Messages

"Big Brother Is Watching"

Straight out of your dystopian nightmares, the Chinese city of Shenzhen has teamed up with an AI firm Intellifusion to carry out policing on jaywalkers. Want to know something that's already crazy and off the wall? Also in Shenzhen, Intellifusion has already been using cameras to capture pictures of jaywalkers and then projecting the image on screens at intersections, with identifying information, for all passerby's to see.

Now they take it a step further..

The company is partnering with social media platforms including WeChat and Sina Weibo and local mobile phone carriers so it can text jaywalkers the second they offend. Police will also have the option of delivering a ticket and fine on the spot for people who are picked up by the AI system for repeat offenses.

How is this not crossing the line (pun non intended)? What kind of precedence does this set? They did just clear way for Xi Jinping to serve his term for the rest of his life. Being an authoritarian govt. this isn't far fetched but is still surprising. I wonder, would something like this would fly in the U.S.?
