Choosing a School
I am currently trying to decide between two master of accounting programs: Texas and UVA. I am hoping I can get some advice on which is better to evenutally end up in IB.
I come from non-target state university and did not put in the necessary networking to break into IB straight from undergrad. So now I have been accepted to these schools and am trying to decide which would be best for two opinions.
1) Go through IB recruiting at the schools and hope they are interested in M. of Accounting students.
or
2) Shoot for Big 4 transaction services in NYC to transfer to banking after a few years and more networking.
Also, I have had internships at a hedge fund and a Citi Smith Barney branch, if that helps.
Any advice on schools or career paths would be really appreciated.
UVA - smaller population than UT and arguably more access to recruiting per student.
Do both of the options you mention, they are both reasonable and could get you a shot.
Agree with UVA. The university as a whole has a slightly better academic brand than UT. You proably won't go wrong with either though.
I would agree with UVA because of the better name (though not by that much), and especially because it probably has more alumni (both undergrad and Darden) in IB. You'll have an easier time networking at UVA. Keep in mind that Big 4 recruiting tends to be regional, so if you have to go that route, make sure they also recruit for the NY offices. For example, CUNY Baruch's MS in Accounting would give you the best access to the Big 4 in NYC, only it wouldn't be nearly as good as UVA for banking.
I agree with all the suggestions made, but do these qualites of UVA beat the fact that Texas is ranked first in m. of accounting programs and has more accounting masters students go into banking (possibly due to the size difference of the programs)?
Also, are these schools comparable enough to just choose the one with the lowest cost or is UVA worth several thousand more?
I appreciate the help.
