CHP Designation?

http://hedgefundcertification.com/
Can anyone provide details on the Certified Hedge Fund Professional designation? Is it taken seriously in the hedge fund community? Is it hard to acquire? Does getting this help one move into the industry?

What is the Certified Hedge Fund Professional (CHP) Designation?

The CHP is a two-level program designed to teach you about the hedge fund industry. As far as designations go, it is relatively unknown. As Certified Hedge Fund Professional – Partner @Bondarb" says, “I work in the industry and I’ve never heard of it.”

Certified Hedge Fund Professional – 3+ Year Analyst @Gray Fox" confirmed this point by stating, “I’ve never once seen a hedge fund analyst or PM with the CHP designation.”

If you want to pursue a designation that will help your career, many recommend the CFA or maybe the CAIA.

From Certified Hedge Fund Professional – 3rd+ Year Analyst @Kenny_Powers_CFA"

  • CFA>CAIA>CHP, in my opinion
  • In my eyes, the CFA is the gold standard for certifications
  • There are some second tier ones with a modicum of value (FRM, CAIA, CIRA/CDBVA if you're into distressed), but CHP is not one of them
  • The first level is extremely rudimentary and the second-level options are focused on back-office, fund of funds, and sales-related items

CFA is recognized and respected. FRM and CAIA to a lesser extent, as well. I've never heard of CHP- a quick google returns that it has something to do with healthcare.

Hey,

I have been associated with CHP program for an year and half.Since 2008 december I have been in touch with them.Their constant updates and newsletters created an awareness and exposure about hedge funds.I was contantly in touch with them and they assisted me in giving career tips and advice regarding how I shall focus on getting an entry position in hedge fund industry.Their certification program helped me a lot in knowing fundamentals and strategies of hedge funds. It was when I completed my CHP level 1 sucessfully I was hired for an internship with Hedge fund group where I got real time exposure and learnt the know-hows of the industry. This internship helped me a lot and it was through which I ended up getting a job with Saturn partners.

Hi Moneyrunner,

I saw this pop up on my Google Alerts so thought I might be able to help, even though I am 100% biased as I help run this program.

The CHP Designation is becoming more and more well known - but it has not been around for 25 or 40 years as some programs have. That is the bad news, the other bad news is that while around 30% of our participants have their tuition paid b their employers I believe that we are not large enough to have 50 or 70% of our participants tuition covered by their employers. It will be a few more years before our program is really the standard in the industry instead of just a name that many hedge fund managers recognize.

The strength of the program is that it is the only program built exclusively by and for hedge fund professionals which hosts a 100% online examination process and training platform containing over 70 video resources. More video resources are uploaded each month to this training platform for participants.

Finally - we just recently created a short video on the question of whether the CHP Designation is credible or not, this may be viewed here:

Hope all this information helps - although I'm sure since it comes from inside the program it means a bit less than a random comment by someone else. Take care.

I am in the program right now and I think its great. Obviously I'm a little biased, but how can it hurt? Think of it this way, imagine if you were going for the CFA in 1964, noone would have heard of it then either and look now. In my opinion that's what I hope this becomes as hedge funds become more prominent and more difficult to get into. Not to mention its a great way to network, learn, and increase your knowledge. Message me if you want more details and I can explain more via email.

Hi Anthony,

While the hedge fund industry used to be small now over 200,000 people work within this niche area of the investment world.

The Certified Hedge Fund Professional (CHP) Program has now had over 1,000 participants within the program and I believe they join because none of the programs you mention above is focused on the hedge fund industry specifically.

Could you earn the CPA and CFP and then work in the hedge fund space? Sure...but you would no nothing about hedge funds and hedge fund managers would know that.

My answer would be yes. If you know what you want and if that is to work with hedge funds or work in the hedge fund industry than I believe we offer something unique - the only 100% online hedge fund training and certification program built by and for hedge fund professionals.

Many professionals who take our program are hedge fund managers themselves. They are experts in trading, portfolio management, or securities research but they don't know the common hedge fund terms, ratios, industry practices, or how fund of hedge funds operate. We help career professionals, hedge fund principals, and consultants who take our program get up to speed on hedge funds.

I hope this helps explain why our program was started and why it has taken hold within the industry. Please post any additional concerns or questions you may have as they may very well be shared by others reading these same posts. Also feel free to email me directly at [email protected] - or through our click to chat function at http://HedgeFundCertification.com.

yeah get it. you seem like the right person! arguing you couldnt go to a target because you were busy trading. You gonna end up opening topics like: will the cfa allow me to break into HF from UG???

this qualification is non existant except of webpages and forums.

The CFA has some value becuase it teaches the concepts of finance.
The CHP has absolutely no value because it teaches about the industry and not really about anything else. By definition there cant be a qualification that allows you to develop an edge which is the prerequisie of making it in the hf industry. But yea... do it. to take it a step further i think getting an CHP, even as a smart person, would rather hinder you than help geetting your feet into the doors of hf. It basically shows you have not even understood a thing.

In my eyes, the CFA is the gold standard for certifications. There are some second tier ones with a modicum of value (FRM, CAIA, CIRA/CDBVA if you're into distressed), but CHP is not one of them. There have been many great comebacks throughout history. Jesus was dead but then came back as an all-powerful God-Zombie.

ANT is a good resource on MSF.

My instinct is that it CAN serve as a replacement in terms of qualifying for jobs, but the CFA is more about the breadth of material than the depth and how to be a general "investment professional." I don't know if it can replace the deep dive into certain quantitative issues that a good MSF can provide.

Is a CHP certificate worth anything? Would it help me join a hedge fund as an equity analyst? Or is a CFA much more valuable?

I currently have the CHP and am currently a senior at my University pursuing the CFA Level 1. From my personal experience I believe they're both good. I pursued the CHP just right out of my sophomore year and noticed that I wanted to stick out or at least be considered as the same level as those Ivy league kids. So coming from a non-target, I completed the exam during the beginning of my junior year and obtained the CHP. During that same month I got an offer from Stephens Capital Asset Management for a possible full-time position as an equity analyst. He said he noticed me from the Hedge Fund Group (which you'll be automatically a member after obtaining the CHP) and from then I started the interview process that same month. Overall the CHP is a valuable designation considering the things you learn and it is definitely credible. Give the CHP a little ease being that its only about 3 years new. And is definitely working towards becoming a reputable designation. But in terms of the CFA, that designation is absolutely more valuable. Its more rigorous (a min. 3 year program) and has a 15% passing rate of all 3 levels consecutively during the first attempt. After talking to many executives and CEOs from banks, they've told me that the CFA is more preferred over the MBA due to the amount of knowledge and material the CFA covers. So just comparing the CFA and CHP alone, the CFA is at a whole other Stratosphere! But still don't undermine the CHP.
