CICC's Prospect for US B-School

Dear all,

I am really glad to be here as there are a lot of smart and experienced people here. Back in China, I really want to hear your voices in US.

Well, I have got an offer as analyst in CICC's IBD (To remind, CICC is the 1st and best IB in China, given the fact that Morgan Stanley is its major shareholder).

As you know, the sell-side market in China is crazy right now. I am pretty sure that in CICC, who dominates the IPO and M&A of Chinese large SOEs, an analyst will get a decent resume on what he has done.

So, I wonder what is the prospect for me to go to Top 10 B-schools in US in two years?

Thanks again. Look forward to heaingr some insights.

Two years experience is too short. three or more years would be better. I don't know much about CICC or banks in China, but I suppose you stand a good chance since it's the top IB in China (and the admissions committee would presumably have heard of it).

I know a couple of guys from China during my b-school days and they seem to work for pretty small local outfits so if they can get in, so can you.

Ok - so can you hear "my voice" now? :)

Valuable suggestion, Banana_milkshake. To work three or more years could definitely build up a better resume.

But analysts in IB with three or more years experience are usually promoted to associates already. Additional two more years in B-school could be a very expansive in terms of opportunity cost.

I guess it might be the same issue for some analysts in US. So how you guys deal with it?

Do not worry about becoing an associate before going to b-school. I know of a, who went to MBA after 8 years (!) of S&T. He said he debated a lot over the opporutinty cost, but realized it was the best decision to go to an MBA: NETWORKING baby!!! That's all it is about.

So, yeahh, with 2-3 years you do not get a good chance of getting in, as there are tons of bankers out there. The only place you can go to an MBA from afte 3 years is M/B/B consulting. Other than that it is good to have 4 years. Try to go into VC in China, after 2 years of banking. If you are looking close, you migh find some quality funds, who want to take advantage of the BOOM there...Good luck!

p.s.: as long as you can stand out from the crowd, you always have a chance at the top 10

CICC is a really great firm, but now is facing great challenges from Goldman and UBS (who managed to get a full-operation license here). Yeah, CICC has pretty secretaries. To remind, almost all Chinese SOEs do too.

About getting into CICC here, it's the same with the foreign BB. Resume with tier 1 college, GPA, IB/Consulting intern could get you an interview. One weird thing in China is that masters become immediately associates(MBA as well), whereas analysts are "exclusive" for undergrads.

IBWannaB, do you think VC provides a better chance? Or should I try to move to a foreign BB like Goldman? VC is in the premature stage in China and provides scare opportunities.

VC was just an idea to set you apart from the crowd (harder to get than IB) and probably have a little more interesting work. Goldman could help you improve your resume too. And I don't think I tell secrets when I say PE would be even better than Goldman. Chineese experience could be advantageous in the eyes of the USA investment firms (and therefore MBA adcoms), as they might probably think about setting their feet in China (and then thinking of you, putting you back there with your top US MBA).

Just my 2 cents.
