Citi SF vs. MBB LA
Hi everyone,
I'm currently a senior in college (liberal arts major) and deciding between two FT offers from Citi in SF and MBB in LA. I'm interested in VC or PE in the future, as well as business school at some point. I'm wondering which role would give me the best skill set, training/preparatory experience, and exposure as my first job out of undergrad. I would really appreciate any and all advice.
Thank you so much!
PE I would say Citi and for VC (if it ends up being tech, life science or similar) probably MBB provided you get staffed on projects of that industry and/or you can move to an MBB office with that focus in 1-1.5 years (Boston, SF or NYC).
Decisions are hard to make :)
Best Skill Set: - It's hard to really judge b/c both are in different directions. Banking is strong on financials and modeling, while consulting is data heavy + client facing.
Training Experience: - MBB arguably has the best training courses + resources available. Citi is more of a beginning one month training session
Exposure: - Pretty much the same, low levels of client engagement years 0-1, and maybe if you're a star performer year 1+. In terms of coolness of work it depends: do you want to solve general strategy problems or find financing + capital structures for HC
Business School: - MBB LA > Citi by a stretch. MBB will finance your entire MBA and place you into a great school. Bain places 60% of their class into HSW btw (at least according to their slide show)
Bottom Line: I'm sure you can find great colleagues in both places, MBB exit opps are better by maybe 20-25% (literally pulling this number from my butt). Choose what you would rather be doing: finance-focused HC work or general strategy in presumably Media & Entertainment + Other Industries.
MBB
Thank you all for the responses!! And thank you @dontsmashme for being especially thorough :)
MBB def - Citi SF is a pretty weak team (I'm assuming it's tech)
