Citigroup Global Transaction Service - Good Opportunity?

Hi everyone,

Which category does CITI GTS fall under? I just accepted the offer after consulting many of my professors. Apparently, GTS is the best performing sector of Citi for the past 2-3 years. Many people call it back office, but according to what I heard from the recruiters, there are a lot of client interactions, and their major clients are F500 CFOs and Government treasuries.

1st year Analyst base pay is >60K+bonus 1/4-1/3 Hours: 9-6 no weekends

I was debating between GTB at HSBC and Citi GTS, but most of my professors say go with Citi for the biggest global network..

I am also wondering what is it like in the real world and whether or not this is a good opportunity if my long term goal is to become a CFO of a F500.

Well, how do you define back office? you are not in the back office if you have to constantly interact with clients over 80 countries. I have a friend who was GTS and transferred to IB with no issues, but he still prefers GTS for the life-work balance. Thanks though, I am just seeking answers from someone more experienced.

1) GTS is not back office

2) If you are located in NY I would strongly consider HSBC. GTS would make it real easy to switch into Treasury and Trade and HSBC really dominates in that space

Back office is a job like in the movie office space. Your doing reports, inputting numbers, data entry kind of things. GTS is more of a relationship management/ business analyst/product specialist type position.

Do a search, GTS has been discussed quite a bit.

 

Hours: 9-6 ? NO WAY! btw, back office staff have to constantly interact with clients AS WELL to confirm settlements, cash / trade transaction details....

of course, GTS is not only back office. it includes front, middle, back offices. it depends on which department you stay.

Front office = IB --> Generates Revenue Middle Office = Risk Management or whatever ---> Doesn't generate revenue, but prevents (supposedly) the loss of revenue Back Office ---> Does the shit people who generate revenue do not have time or want to do.

Really simple. Front office deals with clients, middle office deals with front office, back office deals with other back office. If they deal with front or middle office people it is usually because the FO/MO is yelling at them.

GTS is completely outside this realm. Why? Because it is a different unit. GTS is front office in their own world. Doctors are front office in the medical field, PhD's are FO in the academic world and GTS is front office in the commercial/corporate banking world. Everyone follow me?

IBD makes more total, but probably less per hour than GTS in the first couple years. Does this mean GTS is better? NO. After the 1st couple years IBD potential skyrockets while GTS creeps.

If you have nothing else take the GTS. You would be a fool not to. Realize that it A) isn't IBD, B) Probably not going to be able to transfer to IBD and 3) Going to make a lot less than IBD

Agree with Anthony. I like your definition about front/back office. I interned in a sales team in GTS, and HR arranged a tour for us to visit back and middle offices. Thanks to this experience, I realised GTS was not the place I want to stay (no matter which team, and don't listen to the 9-6 life balance thing), and going to GTS would probably never get you a chance to transfer to IBD.

Very True, GTS doesn't generate revenue from investments but shit loads of fees like brokers~ they might do some investments in money market and loan staff too... Im gonna work at HSBC GTB, should be the same staff, but GTS got so famous because it generated approx. 50% of Citi's 4 billion profit.. and it was once the headline on WSJ... It would be a debate for me too choosing between HSBC and CIti in this area..

 

HSBC is huge with trade financing. Letters of credit and stuff like that is very interesting. I would probably pick Citi just for the fact that HSBC is limited in the United States and that is where you will be doing GTS primarily (at least in the beginning). Great thing about GTS is not too many people go into it and most of the senior people tend to be very old and nearing retirement. Great opportunity for younger people to make moves.

 

Yeah, the responsibilities are not really related to IBD just because its pretty much a sales position. ts a different profession. But I wouldn't use the word "never", if you are smart, you can be an engineer or lawyer and transfer to IBD~ or go to MIT, Princeton for a MSF program, that would get you anywhere. so there are also options~never never~ Personally, I just wanna study MSF at MIT and later be a good trader - day trader!. I hate IBD, modeling staff especially in the analyst level, data searching, modeling 20 hours a day, prepare presentation - I worked at a local PE shop.. Not my personality. I need work excitement during the day and social excitement in the night.. it really defers from person to person.

Smart man. Just do what you love to do.

 

I think it depends on the group.. product specialist group would probably work longer since they do all the technical staff~ sales group gets a lot exposure to the clients though~ overtime is typically 50% per hour rate.. so if you work 80hr/per you get paid 60 hrs :)

 

whether you're paid for overtime or not depends on your grade. assistant manager/management associate above don't get paid for overtime. yes, meal allowance in Citi investment bank side, e.g. IBD, Equity, GFICC, CMO, etc., but no, no meal allowance in Citi GTS if you're not in business trip.

I think for a summer intern, getting paid over time is a pretty good incentive to work longer.. I know many HSBC GTB groups require long hours analyzing markets, pipelines and customer tier etc..

 

Sorry to pick a dead thread, but I was wondering how hard it is to transfer laterally into other parts of ICG. I am a GTS Analyst and would ideally like to transfer to S&T or CMO.

The internal job opportunities website says that you should be in your current position for at least one year before applying for other positions. Should I really follow this guideline, and stick it out in GTS for one year? Or is it better to start emailing people from Capital Markets and Trading that I can find on the internal directory right away?

I have been in GTS for only a few months. What kind of impression will I be giving to HR and other people if I try changing positions within just a couple of months of joining the firm?

 

Spectro - STFU and read Ant's post. quant_finance -- You should definitely stay in your group for a year. I think you can begin networking and set up some informational meetings maybe 6 months into the job, I'd be wary telling ANYONE at the firm that you want to jump just a month into the job. What's up with the horrid engrish all over this thread? Did you guys forget how to write in GTS?

 

they basically help firms facilitate all varieties of financial issues..

hmm i guess that's a pretty vague description as well.

if you read JPM section on treasury securities & services, it might help you make sense of it.

I can say the Citi's GTS is the best. It's their current powerhouse and makes Citi a shitload of money. The hours are a lot better than banking and they get paid on the same level as banking, but smaller bonus. But as of late- large bonuses b/c of the money they're making for citi while banking bonuses have decreased.

 

DaniNo, thanks for the reply. Are you familiar with or know anyone who is familiar with their interviewing process? I searched for posts on JPM's TSS division (which I'm guessing is Citi GTS's comp) and I haven't found anything concerning the types of questions they ask.

 

i'm not sure if you are still waiting to hear from people - but i believe recruiting for this group is completed. Might be different depending on your school? not sure. good luck!

 

apparently you shouldn't fret if you haven't heard from them the day of or after the super day. they do immediately inform one or two candidates whom they really liked, but they wait it out for the others to see what happens at the following super days to make a definite conclusion. at least this is what i've heard. remember, citi gts has 4 super days this year and are looking to hire 20 analysts in this process. already 30 were hired from the summer.

 

GTS is a business line apart from S&T+ IBD and has some FO, MO and BO components, just like all lines. This has been discussed here before and I'm not trying to do that..

I just wanted to know if in fact banks do hold superdays to create a reserve list or something like that. Although lindamas is usually full of shit, it seems like she is right. Thank you for that but seriously, lindamas you should probably check your vagina for sand.

Also, one of my interviewers said that they would'nt be extended offers until December, so my thought is that the entire superday was a a superday of backup candidates to fill the slots of rejected offers.

Do banks do this sort of thing?

Hey, I interviewed with Citi GTS on the 5th as well, and they put me on hold too. They did make it seem like it was a good thing. I think the procedure is, before they give any new offers they have to wait for the outstanding ones to respond. So just have to wait till early December
