Citigroup Internal Mobility

I heard quite a bit about Citi's internal mobility, but is it possible to work in APAC for an SA role and transfer to the same division for FT? I'm international, stuck in Asia until after the pandemic, but would love to work in the US after grad.

you cant do that through citi's internal mobility program, but if you network with the the US division during your SA, get lucky and they need ppl, then its possible (though I've seen more of this from ppl going from NY SA -> HK FT). although note that this could backfire if u play ur cards wrong

citi's mobility thing pretty much requires a few years of working experience in your location of hire to be eligible to transfer

I did SA in another BB (not Citi) in a non-HK office and also got offered FT in HK, although I did not take it. I can't speak for Citi's internal mobility program, but in my understanding, if you want to transfer directly from SA NYC to FT HK then you have better chances if you have high Mandarin proficiency. I have also networked with HK-based people in my bank (again, not Citi) and those who do not speak Mandarin fluently generally spent a couple years in another global office before transferring to HK in the same product desk. Just my two cents. People who know about Citi's internal mobility program please feel free to chip in.

thanks so much for the insight! May I know if you talk to the hr for relocation after they offered u ft offer in NYC or it's more life you network and interviewed for hk before ur internship ended? I couldn't find any sources talking abt how to navigate this kind of situation.... anything abt ur experience would be appreciated!

I think I was in a slightly different spot last year than you are right now. I am fluent in Mandarin and was supposed to do SA in another APAC office last year, and given the covid situation many BBs ended up giving really high (if not simply 100%) return rates in APAC. In my understanding many S&T SA in APAC (think Singapore, Tokyo etc.) whose home offices did not have enough headcounts or whatever just got a HK FT offer by default (it was like this in my bank and at least another top BB). That's why I got the HK FT offer. A few fellow SAs I talked to also got their HK FT offers this way, even if they aren't fluent in Mandarin or don't speak Mandarin at all. However, you being an intern in NYC means that a "default HK FT offer" wouldn't apply to you (and I don't know whether Citi did this last year anyway)

All the above said, I do want to point out this was more due to the circumstances of covid, and this year may or may not be different from last year. In the past years (i.e. employees in HK I networked with during my SA) it was more like I said in the previous reply where non-fluent Mandarin speakers first do a couple years somewhere else (like NYC or London) before transferring to HK. If you would still like to shoot for HK FT this year (and assuming you aren't fluent in Mandarin?) I think you should network with the teams there, try to see if they have headcounts and whether you can see yourself there even without the Mandarin skills. Meanwhile, you should still try to secure a FT offer in NYC as backup at least, and don't burn any bridges with your home team that you intern with in NYC. I know you want to do this international transfer but honestly covid makes this entire situation really volatile (visa/relocation concerns, return rates, headcounts...) so I think the baseline is to get a return offer somewhere and don't fall between the cracks.

I work at Citi and I know multiple people who have switched jobs all over the bank

Internal mobility programs are something you can consider after 2-3 years.

I've seen 3rd year analysts / 1st year associates moving to another country/region. It depends a bit on the connections of your boss and your experience as well. EMEA  Industrials to US Industrials should be way easier than say EMEA FIG to US Oil & Gas.

Switching countries between SA and FT is not an internal mobility program. It's up to you + seniors of your team. I did regional EMEA office internship to London FT at Citi!

I was a Citi S&T intern this year. Before Covid-19, I assumed it was gonna be easy transferring from S&T to IB - with some networking of course. That turned out to be wrong - ofc covid had a lot to do with it. I think Citi as a company is welcome to internal transfers and their HR team is top-notch BUT only if it's convenient for them. I had calls with a bunch of MD's who simply said their hands were tied. Hopefully it's easier for you in a post-covid world.
