Classes to help
I know this may be a tired subject...but if anyone could give me some insight on what classes to take to aide me in getting into ibanking. I am an industrial engineering major and trying to decide to take econ, or accounting classes as electives. Also, are there any alums from Purdue on here that may be able to share their stories of how they made it w/ me, that would be great.
Take as many finance classes as you can. Financial and managerial accounting would also be very helpful.
I agree with captk. That said, this is nothing new. Financial and Managerial Accounting (possibly called Accounting 1&2), will unquestionably be important. Truth be told, I would take as many accounting classes as possible, because nearly every MD I've heard talk has stressed its importance. Similarly, taking at least intro to finance would help alot.
If the choices were advanced financial accounting or intro managerial accounting, what would you recommend?
Definitely advanced financial, which not only is more relevant but also is at a higher level. When they say accounting is important in banking, they're mostly referring to financial accounting, not managerial. Managerial accounting is more useful for managers and controllers (and possibly consultants), but in banking you would want an external user's point of view. Take finance courses and Financial Statement Analysis. I heard that's the most useful class of them all.
