Probably VBA for the little Excel things. That's what my coworkers say anyways. No one really knows how to code where I work though
I've met PE guys who get involved in portfolio companies directly with programming skills. As boring as it is SQL is probably the most applicable across all kinds of companies.
VBA will be phased out as Python is becoming an official plug in for excel. Also Python is the best to learn in terms of time to get competent / usability and speed of the language / program.
It's immensely valuable having hard skills in PE. You can help quickly diligence certain things, aid port co's with hires, etc...
As far as programming goes, definitely python. It's easy enough to get into and there are a ton of great free resources for learning python online.
M_1 When you recruit if you are looking for a non pure Quant role, what level of python / programming usage do you look for and how do you test / quantify that ability?

It seems those are examples of two different situations in which programming skills could prove useful:
1) "Quickly diligence certain things" to the extent that research and diligence could be facilitated by web scraping / interacting with APIs
2) "Aid portco's with hires" in the sense that you would be better qualified to judge candidates for a technical role
