Cold Calling- How to get phone numbers?

Hi,

I would like to start cold calling bankers in NYC next week.
Since I understand that it's not appropriate to cold call bankers at big companies, I will be calling smaller Asset Management, hedge funds and prop-trading companies.
What's the best way to get the phone numbers of bankers at these companies?

I already have a list of about 50-60 companies and I can get names of bankers on Linkedin... the hard part is to get their phone numbers.
I don't think Bloomberg has a lot of the bankers from these smaller companies.

Are you familiar with better databases?

Thanks

In my experience getting in contact is the most difficult part; but once you are in touch it is important for to maintain that your time is important too. The conversations you have with anyone will be much more meaningful if you

  1. Set up and appointment (as opposed to always being available)
  2. Follow up by all means, but not too often (as you will establish yourself as someone who needs something, as opposed to someone with something to offer).

The difference between an annoying telemarketer and a great sales person is getting those 2 steps right - keep your power in the interaction; chasing too hard devalues your product/service.

"Dont compromise yourself; you're all you've got" - Janis Joplin

Thank you for the help, but since the summer is approaching, I need to act fast. The reason I want to cold call bankers in smaller companies is because I need an internship and those companies don't have organized career services.

As far as networking goes, I try to network but I've been doing it with bigger companies and they don't hire anymore for the summer (I had my chances but didn't make it).

So, my goal with cold-calling is to contact bankers and be straight with them that I need a job.

I know its aggressive and rude, but I hear a good number of success stories.

Would appreciate if anybody has an idea about the best way to find phone numbers of bankers.

Thanks

Start with the low hanging fruit first. Call alumni/people you know/people you may know thru a connection.

I'd say it's ok to cold call people that you either A) Know thru mutual connection or B) Are alumni from your school.

The rest I would say that email is the safer route, as a lot of these guys are extremely busy and won't have time to talk if they're cold called. If you do call someone and they DO say they are too busy atm, then push for a date on which they can talk when they are not busy. A lot of times people really do want to help you, but feel better if they have it marked down in their calendar.

Thank you for the reply. But, if I email them first, I need to mention that I'm looking for a career advice so that I don't sound like I'm using them, this type of networking can help me in the long run. How should I bring it to the person that I need help with finding an internship for the coming summer?

I'm obviously developing longer term relationships, but I also need people to help me right now, as quick as possible. I know it sounds bad and egoistic, but my goal right now is to find an internship for the summer and time is ticking :\

If you're going to rush your relationships, you're going to ultimately fail.

Your pitch to these people should be that you want to learn about the industry and you'd like to pick their brain. By telling them you're just looking for a job, then you're doing just what you said before--using them.

These people aren't dumb. They're going to know you want a job. Show some interest and enthusiasm about wanting to learn and they'll be more likely to help you.

Industry guys don't find jobs for people who just 'want' them. They find jobs for people who they think could possibly return the favor in the future. People who are smart and excited about learning.

Dont be afraid to ask. These guys know you're not contacting them for shots and giggles. Send a nice message a Expressing your interest, ask if you can chat more and if they give you a number or want to meet up do that and at the end mention your situation and ask if they can pass your resume to the appropriate party. If these guys are willing to take time out of their day talk, they will be willing to take 30 seconds to forward an e-mail to hr

As your first step in cold calling, print out the classified ads for FSBO and For Rent prospects and put them in the cold calling binders by prefix and in numerical order. For example, if you had two telephone numbers: "321-1234" and "321-1235," you would place them both within the "3" tab with first one (321-1234) in front of number "321-1235." Thus, file them by their first number ("3" in this case) and their sequential order.
