Cold emailing structure for internship/work experience.

Hi,

I'm looking for advice on cold emailing, i.e what should my emails contain.
My situation:
I'm in my junior year at a non-target, I wasn't successful in securing an internship for this summer. So I've been cold emailing and I've started targeting boutique asset managers and consulting/VC firms. I'm looking for advice on the emails I've been sending. Here is an example for a nearby AM firm:

Dear Sir/Madam

I am a penultimate year BA (Hons) Economics & Finance (predicted 2:1) [Note to US members, my GPA equivalent is 3.7] student at the University of non-target, I live nearby in XXXXX and found out about XXXXX firm through a broad based google search.

I'm writing to inquire about any paid/unpaid working experience/internship opportunities that may be present within your firm. I'm interested in your firm due its small size and how that allows it to provide a focused, personal service to the local community and to clients further afoot. Personally, I have a demonstrable interest and hunger to enter the Asset Management industry. I currently manage a student fund with XXXX AUM. As part of my role I have helped build an excel model that tracks fund performance, I also deliver educational speeches to new students providing them with a basic understanding of financial markets, allowing them to engage with the investment process. I believe I have the analytical and persuasive skills that would quickly make me an asset to your firm and I am very excited about the learning opportunities that a position within your firm would offer. I apologize if this is too forward, but i have attached my CV for consideration.

Yours sincerely,
OnlyTwentyOne.

Definitely looks too long. I wouldn't usually ask for an internship off the bat, I usually ask to set up a call and have had good success with that. Something a bit easier to read could be:

Dear Mr X,

My name is OnlyTwentyOne and i'm a penultimate student year studying Economics & Finance at Uni X (predicted 2.1), interested in pursuing a career in Asset Management. I was wondering if you had some time to discuss your experience within the industry, as well as any advice for breaking in.

Thanks,

OnlyTwentyOne

Hi Jutch,

Thanks a lot for the reply. I'll definitely start opting for something more similar to what you've suggested, often I'm not emailing people but instead sending info@firm emails as employee emails are not publicly available. That said the point about length is a good one. Regarding not asking for an internship, I'm not sure about whether or not I should declare that I'm looking for work experience off the bat or not. I understand that it may turn some people off, but on the other hand its May and I don't have much time.

Best Response

I mean you could try, but i've personally not done that. I usually set up a call, ask them open-ended questions and just have a conversation with them. In the end, they usually ask me what my plans are and then we start talking about internships etc. I've used a mixture of LinkedIn and public info to get in touch with people and i've had a pretty good hit rate myself.
