Cold networking in a small city

In other words: how to network in places where everyone knows everyone, there is a small number of firms and you have a limited amount of time - how to manage properly word-of-mouth, shyness and being naturally assertive…

Think about helping a particularly nerdy friend ;)

Ok, I'm a pretty big nerd. We're talking watching LoL on Friday nights so I can relate. But that doesn't change what you need to project-- which is self confidence and humility. First get comfortable talking to people. Do a mock cold call with someone you know. If you don't know anyone then find someone on here. Then e-mail a place you care about less and practice on them. Get feedback. Then start for real. Blast as many emails as possible and talk to as many people as possible and you will get better guaranteed.

Thanks for the info guys and for pumping me up.

By being nerdy I meant more "being oblivious of hierarchical matters and how to properly approach people".

I am used to being in fairly "flat" spaces in terms of hierarchy, which has its pros and cons. I just want to adapt fairly well to vertically-integrated environments. When I get to observe situations (i.e. first few weeks on a job) I turn out good so I am not afraid about that - it's more about learning these things before being in such a situation that puzzles me.

E.g., when people say "contact as many people as possible", I feel like getting in touch with every single analyst at one company would not solve my job problem. ;)

Best Response

Yeah, if it is formal recruiting every analyst helps. I got hired at a place where I knew 10 or so analysts because people knew I was interested. Just stagger it so they aren't all getting your email at once.

Once you get ahold of analysts they can refer you on up. You can also just reach out to md's... if they actually respond it's awesome. If they don't it's no big deal, just one more email. You should be mindful of the hierarchy (who can get you what) but getting in means you might have to ignore it sometimes.
