College Dropout Dreaming Big...Who Wants to Chime in?
Very first post, I stumbled to this site couple of weeks ago... and now I can't get enough of it. I have been binge reading the forums and came across some great, authentic and unbiased advices that has helped me figuring out my near and long term goals. I will summarize my situation briefly and ask you give some straight up feedback without sugar coating!
- Dropped out of college in 2004 to start small business.
- Web venture lasted 5 years with 6 figure cash flow and 3 employees
- Shit hit the fan in 2008. Failure was a humbling life experience. I Salvaged all the equity I could and went back to non-target school (SOM @ UT Dallas)
- Started as MIS major, supported myself by getting in as graveyard BO/operation analyst at GE Tronics, an (outsourcing) network operation firm. pay was decent(actually same as I making making now)
- It lasted for 18 months, before I got tired of nerds (coworkers) which led to changing major to finance, finally something I really enjoyed academically.
- I switched to an intern post at Portfolio Advising Firm (engages in secondary mortgage market) but they converted me (or pushed) as Business Analyst upon graduation. Now I am dealing with on-boarding clients and IT group for business requirements.
- Graduated in 2012.
Now 6+ months after graduation, I am itching for grad school...I need some Words of Wisdom...I am not kidding...my decision dithering will determine where I end up in life...so this thread is kinda important to me. I am asking for street guru to give straight up feedback on following please
- With 720 GMAT; 3.3 GPA, listed experience as an analyst (operation and business) and kick ass compelling essay, what are my chances of getting into:
- MSF program at Cox @ SMU, Jones @ Rice, Mccombs @ UT Austin or MFE at Haas? or
- MBA (2014) at McCombs UT Austin, Booth Chicago or Hass UC Berkley?
- What might prevent from getting foot in the door at big 3 consulting or BB firms during or after MSF/MBA program?
- What do you see as baggage, holding me back from getting into desired program and later at the firm? (I.e. GPA? Ops/IT on resume?)
I realize my ambitions maybe audacious, but I confidently dream big and not afraid of failure!
Any thoughts?

If you go for 2014 MBA's what are you doing between now and then? Still at Portfolio Advising Firm?
I live and Dallas and I'm in a very similar situation. I'm looking at all the same schools as you. I think you have a good shot at all of the programs you listed. You have an average gpa, but a great gmat score and work experience. The only program you mentioned where I think you would be borderline is the msf from smu. The average student there has a GMAT of over 700 and upper 3 gpa's. Most students are 23/24 (makes sense as most msf students apply right after graduation) and have no work experience. Maybe that will give you an edge.
It seems strange that an entrepreneur wants to go through so much schooling.
UT has an entrepreneur fetish, so your chances may be decent there. It seems like you're from Texas, so that'll help.
Join the army or become a minority (spray paint) and get into HBS for free.
