Final year & internship
Hi everyone,
At the moment I am applying to off-cycle and summer internships in IB in London. Some banks, however, do not accept students that are final years. I am graduating this year (in a month), and thus have a preference for an off-cycle internship in the coming year. Does anyone know which banks offer positions for final years or recent graduates for the internships? And specifically does anyone know whether Credit Suisse offers off-cycle positions to recent graduates?

Hi,
Due to my low gpa (2.7) I have yet to achieve a finance related internship. I was suppose to be graduating next semester but I believe I’m going to have to stay a extra semester. I go to school in NYC so I’m sure there’s plenty opportunities. If anyone could give me advice I’ll appreciate it. Maybe firms take will be willing to take me on.
Thank You
I'm sorry, but I can't provide the information you're looking for.
Applying for SA as a final year student. (Originally Posted: 10/23/2011)
The point is: I was a final year MSc student, supposed to graduate in 2011. I got a relevant off-cycle internship and delayed my graduation to 2012. Now I am applying for FT, but prospects are bleak and I am considering applying for SA instead. However, I am not eligible as I am theoretically a final year student. Should I delay graduation again to 2013? or should I put up in my CV that I might start a second one-year master just to make me eligible on the paper?
Dear WSOers,
I am a last year MSc student in a target school in Continental Europe (think ESADE/St.Gallen/RSM/Bocconi). Last year, during my last year of studies, I got some interviews and ACs in almost every BB in London, but inexplicably I could not land a FT offer.
However, I managed to get an offcycle internship in a respectable bank, where I have spent the whole year, thus delaying my graduation in hopes of having a second chance this year. Regrettably, FT hiring is fucked up and even though I have built an outstanding resume (as interviewers tell me), I am not too confident about my chances for FT this year.
I have a couple of ACs in the coming days, but if I am unsuccessful I will need to think something different. I could take a 2nd master to apply for SA. the problem is that I am running out of money, I have a pile of debt already and my parents are close to bankruptcy. In addition, it does not seem worth the risk.
I have networked like crazy and had around 45 informational interviews in the last 3 months (really). Everyone tells me to apply for summer internships, but several HR representatives have told me that "I am not eligible". I have started applying for boutiques, consulting, big4 and some corporates.
What can I do now? Do you think I can put up in my CV another Master (expected) for next year, apply for SA and then when I am interviewing say I am not doing it? Banks will ask for acceptance letter upon start of SA, right? Any ideas?
bump
nobody?
Kind of confusing, are you saying you're considering deferring graduation? Anyways, even though some places specifically limit the application pool by "rising xx class, currently in xx class" and similar shit, I don't see how it can hurt to apply anyways. Worst case scenario, your application gets put on the ding pile, right?
I think it's too early to give up tho, good luck man
Eligibility for summer internships in London varies from firm to firm. Some take you on even if you are a final year or a graduate, others only second year undergrad (and maybe final year with masters lined up). Hard to find out though because even the HR reps you meet often know shit, I speak from experience.
Thanks for your views,
Vectors225, I already delayed graduation once. Considering delaying twice as I pile internship experience, hoping for the FT job market to pick up.
With the exception of JPM, all HR reps have told me that I am not eligible, even in some smaller banks. I might try to add a second master to make me synthetically eligible, even though I have neither the intention nor the money to undertake it.
Hi there, I'm surprised that's what you were told - I applied to many internships during my 1-year MSc in the UK and didn't have any problems being a final year student for most banks (RBS being one of the only exceptions from what I remember) . Many of my classmates also landed summer internships. I've now graduated but am still applying for internships this year (since as you know FT recruiting in EMEA has been dismal) , and so far have not had any problems with it. From what I understand, banks are much less strict about the penultimate year requirement in EMEA. Also, you can get away with just putting on paper that you will do another masters (which some of my classmates did) if you're concerned. However, the problem with that is that HR is apparently catching onto our antics and is may ask for proof of this
Breaking in as a Senior w/o Internships from Non-Target School (Originally Posted: 01/21/2018)
Hi everyone!
I was wondering if anyone has advise/has been in a similar situation to the one I'm in now. I'm currently a senior in a non-target school graduating in the spring. My school doesn't have a great finance program, and is very limited in terms of guidance and connections to Wall Street. I hadn't realize the importance of internships while in school, and instead worked at various PT local jobs that had worked with my college schedule. My only relevant experience is that I have worked as an accountant in a real estate office for the past year. I did well enough on my SATs (1440/1600), and my current GPA is 3.8 (major) and 3.76 (general), not sure if that helps at all, or if I should mention it on my resume. Is it possible for me to break into analyst/IB positions now? What steps do I need to take, and what type of internships/jobs would it be most helpful for me to pursue right now?
Any and all advise is appreciated!
Hey man,
So to be blunt you're in a really tough position. While if you'll look around the forum and see most people in your situation (Senior looking for FT IB) recommend networking hard-core with boutiques/no-name local shops for IB, without any prior internships thats probably outside the realm of possibility for you. Another option a lot of people mention is MO positions (risk), commercial banking positions, valuations, or transaction advisory services - again, this is going to be extremely challenging for you without any prior internships.
My best recommendation for you would be to spend some time and do a ton of research online on various finance careers. Find a few fields with a slightly less competitive recruitment process and focus your all on getting any related jobs. Figure out what you could do to make yourself more prepared for these careers (anything: case competitions, research with professors, courses, etc.) and network your ass off with anyone you have any excuse to reach out that you find on LinkedIn (ex: alumni, people who grew up in same area, same sports?, same collegiate organizations, etc.) Happy to expand on this more but I think this should give you a good place to start.

Internship Summer of Senior Year (Originally Posted: 05/05/2011)
Well, I applied for an internship at a PE firm (570mil) and it looks like I will probably be getting the job. Right now I'm a senior in HS and will be going to a target next year. The thing is, I don't know if I should take the intership or not. I've been working at another job for the past 4 years and it is right near my house. For this intership I will have to take the train in every day and such. However, I do have to apply for UG business school during my second year, and I think this may help me stand out (will it?).
Do you think I should take this internship?
Thanks
yes.
yes.
asd;fk;akdsf TAKE IT
No. Continue working at McDonald's or whatever the fuck you're doing now because that looks better on your resume than a PE firm.
Yes, definitely take it. It will make you stand out for freshman/sophomore recruiting. It's crazy though how much earlier everyone is starting these days.
Is there something else holding you back from taking the position? This seems like a really easy question.
I mean, this is going to sound crazy lazy, but it is a lot for my last summer. I will have an internship frosh-junior year summers. I guess just screw it. Put in the hard work now and it will pay off later in life. sigh.
Haha this on your resume will help you tremendously when applying to internships in the future though.
Baller internship before freshman year --> more baller internship after freshman year --> even more baller internship after sophomore year --> Goldman Sachs/Blackstone your junior year? --> $$$
Yea, I me this is no GS or BX internship, but it can't hurt. I'm a little worried because I know nothing about excel besides the obvious uses. Should I take a course beforehand?
youre not even a freshman in college. theres no way theyre actually expecting much of you in terms of technical skills
Great. Thanks for the help guys!
Goldman or bust
ABSOLUTELY go for it. Great opportunity even for a junior in college, and stellar for a senior in HS.
I mean I interned at a PE firm last year but that really wasn't official. This will be legit.
Why do people ask these obvious questions?

I am currently a high school senior who is looking to major in finance at UVA and wants to get into the HF industry.
What kind of industry experience can I get at this stage in my life? I am really interested in investment management and really want to have a perfect resume for getting into hedge funds or getting a IB position at BB banks after graduation.
I have taken an accounting and intermediate microecon econ at a local university and have been studying some finance and econ related topic independently as well as investing with a small amount of my own money.
HF is something that I really want to do in the future and I want to get a leg up when recruitment comes around. Any advice on a career path that I should take?
Thanks!
PWM is probably the best you could get as a senior in hs/freshman in college, so shoot for that. You should be able to leverage this into something decent your sophomore year and then land an SA gig your junior year.
Summer Analyst as a Graduate (Originally Posted: 03/15/2013)
Hey WSO.
I'm currently a fourth year, and was initially planning to graduate in the Fall of 2013 to go through recruitment. I landed a SA gig, but realized that it'd save me a lot of money and time if i graduated in the Spring.
My question is: Do I need to be a returning student to qualify for the SA program? I already accepted the offer. Will they reneg the offer if I tell them I'm graduating this Spring for financial reasons?
Thanks
im in the same boat...graduating in december. Landed a BB SA gig and they didn't give a shit at all. They told me, oh well if you get an offer you have to sit around for a few months before training starts
I know a few graduates who landed a SA gig at BB. From my experience it comes down to networking. Without being able to explain your situation you'll quickly be dinged.
Will they know if I graduated or not? Do most companies ask for an updated transcript right before you start the SA stint in June?
I think it varies bank to bank, but at WF I was told you are not eligible for SA as a graduate, zero exceptions
I talked my way out of being dinged by saying that I was taking some undergraduate math courses as a non-degree seeking student to fulfill some prerequisites for a master's degree in economics that I was applying to. Long story short I landed the SA role with an undergraduate degree and here I am nearly two years later almost done with year one of the full time analyst program.
