Columbia vs Duke

monkeys....

duke emba vs columbia emba considering the cost of duke is 10k and columbia is 50K after gi bill(thanks gwb)...is the extra 40k worth the cbs name over duke?

6 years military, 1 year as management consultant(tier 2)....don't want to take 2 years off to go to school...also found out if you aren't sponsored by a company you can participate in FT student on-campus recruiting which with the gi bill will be my case(such a scam)....

want to stay in consulting but would like to break into a bain or BCG or m&c need the mba to do it.....

thoughts?

wait are you using gi bill for the csb emba program? i was factoring bah which may or may not be possible with electives....i know if you are over 6 credits you get bah....it would be a huge help if you have more info...thanks...

I think columbia is superior... but on the flip side you might have a lot more fun at duke.. there will be hot UNC undergrad babes in your immediate vicinity, basketball games, low cost of living etc... if you've spent 6 years in the military maybe it's time for some r&r!

@ LLcool why not real MBA? according to the schools eMBA is the same degree its not a separate "eMBA". you get a wharton mba from both the ft program and the executive one(straight from the website and diane sharp). same for columbia and duke. i am already in consulting not looking to break into it, which would be another reason to go ft. another huge piece is that if you aren't sponsored you can submit your resume with the ft students...i will be 32 when i finish and will have 3 years management consulting exp...the way i see it if i have columbia mba and military background with 3 years consulting under my belt ill be just as desirable if not more than some military candidate str8 from the 2 year program...also note that many of the people in the exec program are 35-40 and have been in the business world for 13+ years which is great for networking...i know its tough to believe since everyone including myself is brainwashed about the ft importance but after looking at the opportunities through the emba its a no brainer for me....oh also ill be making a salary during the 2 years which helps...

@ silchasruin99 thanks for the feedback...why do you think they are unhappy? no offense sounds like a very subjective observation...maybe they just got done with a final or some big assignment...your telling me they actually told you they were unhappy with the program???

not sure why they all were but seriously best advice is to just visit during a regular school day, chat with random students and ask them point blank if they enjoy it there, wish they had gone somewhere else, etc.

I spent a good few hours doing that and a lot of them said they wish they had gone elsewhere. The best response I got was, it's ok. Oh and it wasn't during finals or anything just last February. I must have chatted with ~20 students.

You're in consulting, go do some field work ;). On the other hand, obviously NYC is a much more interesting place to live then Durham NC.
