Comml Banking or Small PE firm
I work in RE Comml Banking at large bank (WF/JPM/BofA) Would a move to a small PE firm be beneficial if the goal is to transition into PE or Acquisitions? RE Comml Banking is slow growth because there is not much turnover at the senior level so you can end up doing the same job for a couple of years. However, it is a large bank so there is reputation/prestige.
Any advice/perspective is much appreciated.
You just said your long-term goal is to be in PE/Acquisitions, I don't see how it's not beneficial. As long as you are learning and there's deal flow, that will set you up better than doing commercial banking imo.
Agreed with JimboUSC
If your goal is to get into PE or acquisitions, then a move in that direction seems rational and logical so long as you will be in the flow. Regardless of the shop size, it will be much different than BB RE Commercial Banking no matter what, so you'll be gaining a different skills at a bare minimum.
Sounds good. I was doubtful because the lack of big name may make it more difficult to get better exit opps. But it looks like I will gain different skills .
where's the office? pm me if it's to private
The best way to get experience in a position is to have done the work that position entails already. The best way to set yourself up for PE (I'm assuming at a large fund), is to do PE at a small fund.
The move from commercial real estate lending to an investment/acquisitions role is a lot easier than you think. It's, obviously, all about the networking. I know a firm here in Nashville that was started by four guys from the lending side, one in the exact role I'm in now. No matter the size, get to one, then work up.
Looks like salary at PE firm it would not quite match Comml Banking pay + benefits(4wks vacation etc). ~ $100-115k + 15-25% bonus at PE.. Thoughts?
How much of a difference is it?
Thoughts anyone?
