Commodity Structuring/Origination

Got an offer to join a MM commodity desk as a SA and I was wondering what structuring within commodities would entail exactly? Also what skills are gained and possible exit ops are there if one were to start there?

I would take it 100%. I know originations better than structuring...but basically you can do anything on the commercial side of a commodity house/miner/oil major with that xp.

It will be a different set of skills and exits than a trading seat or a banker, but if you have some interest in sales/commercial roles, you're in a good spot.

Anyone that knows more than me, feel free to correct my take

Thanks for the response. I was told they are keen on growing out their structuring/origination (which seems rare in most S&T desks from what I read on here), and that intrigued me. I feel that I am better suited for an S&T role, but I can't ignore all the negative discourse on here in regards to pay, exit opps, etc..

I say go for it. It's a bit more "business-y vs. trade-y" on the originations side. I think its a more transferable skillset to know how to a) price a structured trade & b) manage the customer relationship & generate new biz vs. just market making at a bank or trading the book on a spec basis

I have seen a fair few traders in the mid-career have to move to some startup or learn to code because they got stopped out. If you are good at structuring/originations, you can move to cushier corporate roles at a downstream major for instance.

There are a good few threads about originations on WSO i believe.

Makes sense, I guess I'd have the opportunity to see how I like it and go from there. I appreciate the insight

Prospect.

I have run Structuring desks.  Across most commodities. Originated.  Traded.  Financed. Consulted and started my own business.

A good Structuring desk is better than an MBA in most cases (I have one as well).  I STILL use stuff I leaned from 20 years ago today.  Every day.
