Commodity Trading Adviser (CTA) Job Hunt Advice?
Hey, I was wondering if anyone has experience looking for positions with CTAs in NYC. I'd be open to different roles, but ideally I'd like to find a CTA with a strategy that sells option theta. I'm just coming off of a role in a BB commodity sales position. I don't know anyone who works with CTAs so I'm wondering if there's a systematic way to try to get in front of these people and learn about open opportunities. It looks like many of them are HQ'd downtown, and I'm wondering if there's maybe a physical place where I could go and try to introduce myself instead of just picking up the phone and getting brushed off. Also, has anyone heard of an online site where CTAs post openings? Thanks and hope to hear from you
Don't CTAs exclusively focused on Trend Following strategies?
I believe that being a CTA has to do with legal fund structure more than with strategy. I know of a small macro fund that focuses on rates futures that's structured as a CTA.
No, CTA"s do not exclusively focus on trend following. You see a lot of trend following in the CTA space because they trade futures/options/commodities only. Futures have leverage and it only takes a few ticks to gain a sizable return on investment. It only makes sense to trade the trend. They trade whatever strategy they think can make money like any other fund.
Like Kenny Powers said... It is the legal structure that separates CTA's from HF. CTA's HAVE to place their track record on their website for the world to see, while if you visit a HF site you see "client log in". HF must solicit high net worth individuals only and CTA's do not have to. It gets deeper but that is the general overview.
To answer your original question.. No, cold calling and emailing is your best bet.
Thanks Bravo. I'm hoping I can find either a research or execution trading position. I've begun to email people, think I'll wait for the cold calls until day 2....gotta love the job search.
If anyone has insights into any particular CTAs that like to hire interns, or any other relevant insights at all, would love to hear your thoughts.
Is NYC your only choice of cities? Or are you willing to relocate?
