Considering another minor
I am a Banking and Financial Institutions/Finance double major with a minor in accounting. My goal is to make it into the investment banking area, not sure exactly where yet. I am set to graduate a semester early in December 2019. If I could add a minor (I know that most share the opinion that they're useless, but I don't have enough time to go for another major as I don't want to stay in school extra time) what minor would be most beneficial? I have narrowed it down to Management Information Systems, Comp Sci - Information Assurance, Comp Sci - Information Systems, Computing Science (not sure what the difference between those three are), Economics, Mathematics, Statistics - Stat Meth, and Statistics - Stat Theory. Any type of guidance is appreciated.
There is also a possibility of me going the commercial banking route (which would be more of a backup plan) if that changes your answer at all. Thanks.
I would go comp sci, math, or stats meth.
do you have a preference for one of those? Which comp sci would you take out of the three options? Thanks for the advice!
I would go info systems though you probably would want to do more research. I think a minor would be useful to differentiate yourself from the typical finance applicant. I have a math double major with finance and I know it played a large role in why I landed interviews. I think you can network and do the minor as well.
Comp Sci: The Ultra Meme.
OP, out of those choices, statistics will likely be most useful. You’ll be able to do jack-shit in IB with a minor in comp sci, and it might actually be detrimental to your GPA. Comp Sci is a fat meme unless you absolutely love it; otherwise, it’s an absolute waste of time to get a minor in the subject.
Forget the minor. Use the time you save to network.
You would forget it even if I will be completely done with my courses other than the extra minor by December 2019? I would have the spring semester to finish the minor before graduating, and could be networking during school the whole time. I feel that I can network efficiently while taking courses, so that being said you would still drop the minor?
Don't add a minor. Just crush your classes and get a perfect GPA. Use the extra time to work out, take some language course like Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese or French, and a communication course to practice presentations.
Adding "spanish" or "portuguese" or "chinese" to your resume is much more helpful than adding a "Math" minor, especially in this era of emerging markets and globalization.
Source: someone who majored in electrical engineering and economics, and had 4! minors. In math, political science, finance and technical management. They lowered my GPA, killed my social life, and had a minimal add to my marketability.
