When I applied to Bain and BCG (North America offices) out of undergrad, they only asked 1 "behavioral/fit" question for each interview and focused mostly on the case for each round. All of the behavioral/fit questions were standard - no surprises, no follow up questions. I think it was the same for Altman Solon (then Altman Vilandrie) and LEK.
McKinsey looks like they do a lot
So do all the big 4
McKinsey has by far the most intense behavioral interview of all consulting firms through their "Personal Experience Interview" or PEI
In terms of quantity + difficulty of behavioral questions, it goes McKinsey >>> BCG > Bain. This is pretty much in line with the length of interviews. McKinsey interviews are 50 mins, BCG 45, Bain 30-40. With less time in the interview, less time is given for behavioral questions.
The McKinsey PEI is intense and you will fail it if you don't specifically prepare for this type of behavioral. Regular behavioral prep doesn't go far here.
Interestingly, I felt that Bain cared the most about personality and fit, yet asked the fewest behavioral questions. They seem to get a sense of the person's personality through their interactions during the case. Bain interviews also felt the least structured/formal to me as well.
FWIW, I had 2-4 behaviorals for the firms (MBB/B4/T2) I interviewed with. I think it is highly variable and wouldn't bank on any firm not asking many. Def agree what you said about the PEI though.
Apart from McKinsey that's not too many at all
