Consulting from Brown
Hello,
Coming from Brown, what are the chances of landing a consulting position FT at a top firm with a GPA of 3.8+ as a econ concentration with an emphasis in entrepreneurship and technology? I may possibly pick up a second concentration in something like philosophy, international relations, history, etc..
If it matters, I am a native american.
Summer after senior year- Have Internship at UBS Wealth Management
Soph Summer- Hopefully BB Minority IB Program
Junior Summer- Hopefully BB internship or, ideally, MBB internship? How possible is this?
So how likely am I to break in? I am going to network a lot and will search for brown alums at a lot of firms. Does anyone ever hear of anyone from Brown going into top consulting firms?
Wrong dude.
ur still in highschool?
but since ur native american, seo should already have ur marble throne prepared. u have good chance at the minority program
Anymore feedback please?
A few more questions:
1) If I cannot land an MBB or other top firm summer internship, will a BB or other top IB internship be sufficient? I can see that top consulting internships are much harder to get.
2) At what level to consultants begin to have opportunities to work with/travel to international companies? Are most lower positions working with clients that are more in the region of the office or are the nationally or internationally?
3) Anything I can do as of now to work on improving my chances? My concentrations will probably be in Econ/Organizational studies or Tech. Management and a second concentration in something more liberal arts related such as philosophy, history, etc.
I would appreciate responses
I'm assuming your finishing up your freshman year, the main thing to remember when trying to land MBB is that you need to one atleast one prestigious internship and high GPA (like you said 3.8+)... so IBD at BB or strong MM, or strat. consult. at a good firm...
what I don't understand is why you are ruling out internship at MBB during soph. or junior year? I'm not sure about recruting at Brown but MBB do recruit at other ivies, if they don't recruit at Brown then make sure to network with Brown alumni at those places
Maybe because (unless one of the OP's parents is a C-level F500 exec) MBB internships aren't possible at any time other than junior summer? You might be able to do a 1-2 week "career exploration" type thing at some other point, but that's semi-pointless.
I think you'll be ok as long as you maintain that 3.8. If MBB don't recruit on campus, you could still get through applying online, I know that works at Bain.
Works at all MBB, I have a friend who went to a non-target, applied to all 3, and got offers from all 3.
keep your 3.8
you're doing good
MBB definitely recruit at Brown. The founder of McK - Marvin Bower - was a Brown alum. Bain has a strong culture fit with Brown. Heads of a few flagship BCG offices are also Brown alums. So, in short, you have great chances of landing a FT job coming from the school.
The summer internship is hard to get for anyone from any school. But for FT MBB hold many more first round interviews, and quite a few advance to get the offers, in my experience with the recruiting team at a MBB office.
Unless you have mad connections, and even then, it's highly unlikely to get a sophomore internship at MBB. I only know of 2 personally who have had internships at these firms and they were in foreign (non US) offices and they got them through knowing top leadership at the firms.
That said, you don't need to have a soph internship at MBB to get a FT job there - experiences at boutique consulting firms give you great background to try MBB for jr summer.
Thank you so much! So is most of the travel domestic? And at the entry FT level is most travel regional, national or sometimes even international? At what level can I expect international travel or to begin working with internationally based companies?
Most (80-90%?) of the travel is domestic, but if you get a good reputation and network internally, it's definitely possible to get on an international travel case as a first or second year. M/B/B all have international offices, so it's unlikely that you would ever get to a point where international travel is a regular thing (the economics of flying people out just don't make sense).
how common is it to get staffed at another office? i hear the local office sometimes staffs its people at other offices for entire cases. what exactly does it mean accommodation-wise? anybody know?
You're a consultant in DC, but one of the Chicago partners just sold a TON of work, and the Chicago office has been really busy, so they don't have enough bodies to staff it.
As a result, you get staffed "through the Chicago office" and commute to Chicago for M-Th (and maybe even M-Fri if you don't want to call in to Friday case team meetings).
