Consulting placement from private equity rotations into private equity firms

Does this ever happen outside of headhunters? For example, I am thinking that if you are on Bain PEG rotation for two years, and you tell the partner under which you work "Hey, I want to move to PE, I've given you two good years of service, can you ask one of our clients if I can interview?"

I know this works for non-PE industries but because of the relatively structured PE process I'm curious if this holds true in PE consulting as well.

bump. I'm thinking for some of our larger clients, getting the partners to ask "Hey, can Making Gravy interview on cycle with you guys?" and for the smaller ones "Hey, whenever you need an associate, can you be sure to Include Making Gravy in your interview shortlist?"

Just wondering if this is a reasonable thing to account for in planning.
