Continue MA in Econ or drop out to seek experience & Mfin/MBA up to 1-2 years later?
Hello,
My question is about MA in Econ in the finance industry versus person another degree( MBA or MFin):
1) What types of jobs are mostly considered an Economist specialty?
Preferably in the fields of Consulting, IB, equity research and M&A
2) Is there any advantage to having MA marks for an MBA admission?
3) Do many MA in Econ graduates do MBA later in life?
4) Does a high gmat score improve admission chances over poor grades 3 years before completion of a bachelors?
I am currently 2 months into my MA in Econ program, but I am having change of heart, as it is very much a repeat of my 4th year of my BA in Economics degree and this has hurt all motivation. Furthermore, the co-op/internship portion of the program is designed to accommodate the large MBA population and their new Mfin program and much less my program.
That is why I am considering dropping the program, studying for the GMAT and find employment for up to 2 years.
My MA Econ program is unique that it allows up to 3 MBA classes and one cross listed Econ/MBA class in the 8-9 courses and a Co-op internship for 4 or 8 months. The school is Wilfrid Laurier University near Toronto, Canada. It’s a good school for the finance industry in Toronto area mostly for MBA & CMA combo programs. Since it is a small university it ranks below U of Toronto, Western Ontario’s Ivey, Schulic School of business and McGill.
I applied to MA Econ programs because I was unable to prepare for the GMAT in time, and I was not considering MBA given just being out of university.
I accepted at Wilfrid Laurier University because other better MA in Econ programs rejected me probably because of my switch in majours( occurring just before the 2 year mark). In my BA in Economics program I was able to redeem myself with Honours and 88% majour average despite poor past performance.
Any input would be appreciated. Thank you.
