Convince me to try to go to Ross

over Michigan's College of Engineering

I've heard that recruiting has gone from almost all Ross to half-Ross, half-LSA/CoE... and that MBB/s&t will probably look at engineering moreso than IB would.

I would be going for computer sciences in CoE and would've tried to double major in CS/finance if it didn't take an extra year. I've also heard that minoring in something like CS tends to not give you some leniency regarding the GPA.

So does anybody know how recruiting for CoE is?

Which one would YOU pick if you were trying to get on Wall Street but still wanted to leave your options for a masters (possibly in cs/engineering) open? Is Ross really that much more valuable than an engineering degree?

Then I'll call you a poop face

excellent point my friend! haha

is there a way to major in finance (wo also majoring in cs) while still leaving the possibility for a masters in something like cs open?

I would just major in straight up CS. BB's recruit a lot of CS kids for S&T. Do that, and then do an MBA if you really want to. But the best option is to suck it up, work hard, and double major.

I think I'm gonna suck it up and double major but if you guys HAD to pick one... which would you do? Ross or CoE?

The only thing I'm worried about is recruiting I guess even though it's been said on here that if you can't get in from a non-target through busting your ass, you don't deserve to get in... still though, I'd like to make breaking in as "easy" as possible.

Would going CS -> MBA by skipping Ross be something I'll regret?

Don't plan your education around the assumption that you'll get an MBA. There's no way you can predict at this point in your life whether or not you'll need an MBA. An MBA is not always necessary, and often times it can be a better idea to not get an MBA because you don't want to spend insane $$$ and two years of your life. I would just stick it out with the technical major because, let's face it, engineers are taking over the world, including finance. An engineering degree is definitely the most versatile degree, and employers favour engineering students for S&T.

Good stuff... maybe I can rest a little easier now knowing that even if I don't get into Ross, all hope is not lost and I may actually end up better off. I started a lawn care business this year and I'm stressing about making it look good on paper so I can get into Ross, so maybe I'll be able to enjoy my summer a lil bit more.

And yeah, I'm not really assuming that I'm getting an MBA, but it looks like if I had to choose a masters in the future, an MBA would definitely be a finalist.

Still gonna try to double major though... go big or go home I guess ha

My company is hosting an annual week-long executive education session with Ross professors in another week. All of the attendees were engineering majors. Go with engineering for undergrad and decide if you need an MBA later. If you do get an MBA, your undergrad business degree becomes worthless, but an accredited engineering degree will stay with you.

Does anyone know of any jobs where an employer will hire an undergrad with a business degree but not someone with an engineering degree? I can't think of any at the moment, but there must be some...

again... good points. Maybe the recruiting at Mich is gettin a lil more spread out?

sounds good to me

edit: to kote... do you know what f500 companies think about engineering majors for corporate finance?

It depends completely on the manager / recruiter. Corporate finance is probably the one area I can think of where straight out of undergrad the business major will have an advantage though. You'll definitely be questioned for fit as an engineer. Of course, you can network around that problem if you plan properly. There are often requirements at the entry level that applicants have taken some accounting courses at least.

What year are you in? Have you already applied to Ross?
