Cornell real estate minor

Anyone here did the undergraduate minor in real estate at Cornell? How competitive is it to get into the program, and how is it compared to one of the concentrations at the Hotel School?

It's a super common minor and not difficult to get--you need to maintain a 3.0 and have above a 3.2 in the classes that go towards your minor. You need (about) 7 classes and 3 of them are required hotelie classes anyway.

Oh and a concentration is different from a minor. Concentrations are generally easy to attain, don't have a GPA requirement that I know of, and have 3-5 required courses--except for development, that concentration has more courses involved I think.

Those classes can count for either type of elective. A Hotel School elective is any elective within the Hotel School, and free electives can be in any school. There are classes that aren't in the Hotel School that can count towards the minor too (see the list of classes on the link I posted). But I wouldn't worry too much about all that just yet if you're an incoming freshman; you have 2 years of assigned core classes to knock out before you really get started on your minor, and the RE minor is so common that you'll no doubt have friends doing it with you.

The career advising benefits are exactly what you make of them. Your "dedicated adviser" won't go out of his/her way to help you, but if you reach out to them and ask for their help, I'm sure they will put you in touch with the right people/advice to get you started on your career. I don't have personal experience with hotelie career services, but I hear good things. And the RE career day has a decent amount of companies in all different functions of real estate, and not just hotel real estate; REPE firms, brokerage firms, REITs, at least one REIB group that I remember, etc.

You're going to the best hospitality program in the world, and an ivy league institution, so I wouldn't sweat it too much. All the resources are there if you just take advantage and network. If real estate is your thing, then you're at one of the best places for it. If not, then everything else is within reach.

Hope this is helpful. Congrats, and enjoy.
