Corporate Development Crash Course for a Lawyer

Hi all,

Thought I'd reach out to the those of us that have reached the "grey haired" levels of Corporate Development (or even PE for that matter) re a rather challenging "training" situation that has presented itself.

I'm looking to recruit an Associate to our Corporate Development team, and the particular candidate I have in mind is coming from our (internal) legal department. Now this particular candidate is an absolute pistol and knows our industry back to front (less the individual get beaten out by the plethora of external BB candidates who applied for the position) but other than working on live transactions from a legal perspective, has zero non-legal training in the corporate development space.

So the question is, if I'm willing to invest in this individual (both monetarily for formal training, and also from a time commitment perspective through having the Senior Associates and Principals in the team spend the time coaching etc), exactly what crash courses would you recommend?

My thinking is that a financial modelling course (or courses) will be a necessity, but what about a CFA level or two.... Or some executive education...?

All thoughts appreciated, and SBs on offer for particularly innovative ideas...

  2. There are some good crash courses available as @j-rad suggested. TTS, Wall Street Prep. I actually took New York School of Finance which I thought was great. I know a lot of clients that have sent their juniors in corp dev to these training programs to help them build the necessary skill set to be supportive in a transaction. I also have a specific idea, but will PM you that.

Personally, I think CFA Level Two is a bit of over kill.
