Cover Letter Advice-- "dissing" rival firm
Hello,
I'm writing a cover letter and I'm in need of some help. I'm applying to company A in the same industry as another company B I have experience at. The way I have it set up right now is
First half: talk about why I love the industry (based on experience at B)
Second half: talk about why I want to work at A
My primary concern is A will read this as "why don't you just go work at B". To fix this problem I gave a (legitimate) downside of B in the second half and explained how A doesn't have this issue.
Does this do enough to show A that I really want to work there? And is it okay that I "dissed" B (not in a negative, but matter-of-fact way)? Or am I overthinking all of this and nobody is going to read my cover letter anyway?
Thanks very much for your advice.
You are over thinking it.
You're smart enough to know that you should never put negative feelings in writing, especially in a cover letter.
Sidenote: I chirped a rival firm in my interview. We had a good laugh. Face-to-face material
Okay thank you very much! I slept on it and think you are right--I'll just explain why I really want to work at firm A
