Cover Letter Question for GPA

I had a quick question about addressing my low GPA in a cover letter. Is this to dramatic or is it good? Everything is 100% accurate and I can go into more detail if a recruiter asks.

"To address any concerns about my GPA, I would like to explain that during the first two years of college I was distracted from my academics due to extracurricular activities, causing my GPA to dip. During my third year, I really found myself and made some huge life changes which included quitting many things I thought were unnecessary, for life. For this reason, I believe that my GPA is not fully representative of my work ethic and level of qualification."

I wouldn't send that out. Few people will read it anyway.

What you want is something like this;

"During college I was a member of (campus activities) where I demonstrated leadership in (stuff).

Although my cumulative GPA is not as strong as (put major GPA here) I accomplished (other stuff that is different from the first stuff).

Lastly, I have maintained a GPA of (GPA) since then and have (improvements you made) to demonstrate my dedication to (major here) while still continuing to maintain a successful record of campus involvement in (group here)"
