Crazy Switch from ER to IBD/PE/VC

Complex story but here we go...

I got 2 years of strategy consulting experience at a Tier 2 consulting firm and a few months of PE experience and got retrenched due to covid 19. I got an opportunity to work in equity research for a top tier BB but I still want to be in PE but the opportunities right now are hard to come by. Wanted to ask what are my options? Should I take the job in equity research and try to pivot to IBD and eventually to PE again or try my luck again to pivot to PE after a few months of ER.

Absolutely doable (albeit not the traditional path) to go directly from ER to PE, especially with a top BB name on your resume. I've seen a few people do this firsthand. It's important to sell that ER developed how you think about investments and your macro perspective. Of course you need your story and LBO modelling down, but don't rule out the opportunity you have in front of you.

 

Honestly - never seen this move made. Not to say its impossible, just personally haven't seen have it happen.

I previously worked in ER for 2 years, and we posted an annual note (5-10 pgs) on private companies we monitored. Does your team do anything similar w private co's? That's the only way I can really imagine you leveraging your ER experience.

Additionally, I saw in your post history you dislike the sector you currently work in. This will also be a challenge, as I imagine one of the few ways to go ER > VC would be selling yourself as a sector specialist.
