Credit Suisse HOLT Valuation Challenge

Recently got accepted to Credit Suisse's HOLT valuation challenge; however, it has been postponed due to Hurricane Sandy. So, I thought I would take this opportunity to find out more about the competition.

Has anyone on here participated in the challenge or will anyone be participating in this year's competition? I feel like this will be a good experience for someone like me, who wants to get into IB and hopefully it will serve as a good addition to my CV in terms of relevance.

Anyway, if anyone has any additional information on this challenge, feel free to let me know.

Are you familiar with the HOLT framework? Basically you will utilize Credit Suisse's proprietary technology to valuate different companies based on their "Cash Flow Return on Investment". Basically their technology reconstructs the firm's balance sheet and calculates adjusted cash flows from it.

Yes. I took it in initial pilot phase and moved into the next round. It's relatively straightforward. Watch videos to learn about the CS HOLT valuation methodology, and then answer MC questions about it. Although it is finance related, I was a marketing major at the time when I took it without any (and I mean any) expertise in finance, and I still beat out a lot of other students. Take it seriously if you want to be seriously considered for a position. It's also extremely helpful for understanding different forms of valuation... the CS model is quite interesting because it makes you think about valuation from a completely different standpoint. It's like comparing GAAP financial statements, which don't necessarily reflect the true validity of a business, to internal financial statements, whereby a company actually looks at issues of its business. Quite interesting.

On top of that, if you win you get to have access to their valuation platform... so you can do your own research on companies.

Hope that helps.

are there any other competitions like these where i can take part ?

I wouldn't mind hearing of other competitions as well..

BNP Paribas have an global competition called Ace Manager, however it is done in teams and I think the next competition is next year.

UBS run an Investment Banking case study competition in Australia in March/April, so they probably do something similar in other regions.

There are tons of simulated trading game competitions out there, I know Yahoo ran one last year that was open globally...in Australia the ASX run 2 per year, DCM Bluelake run one, then there is VirtualShares which have competitions year round.

Same deal with business consulting case competitions...lots of them...KMPG have an international one and PwC, Momentum Partners and Deloitte run local ones where I am.

To find competitions in your area just run a few google searches, check out the company websites/enquire with their HR and keep your eyes open at campus.

This site is pretty good too for finding opportunities:

Student Competitions (google it) is good for finding out opportunities too.

This really helped, thank you. I especially like studentcompetitions.com, there isn't much now but I am sure it will in the beginning of 2013.

The number of questions asked varies for each week but if I recall correctly it should be about 9 and then there will be a few bonus questions that you can do as well. The questions are generally quite easy (I took it when I was a freshman without having attended finance classes) as the videos really helped. Do read the reference guide about HOLT too!

It's not bad to have on your resume...I've had some interviewers asked me about it before.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I have a question about the Holt Valuation Challenge and its value on a resume.:

Just wondering if there is any value to saying you participated in the Holt Valuation Challenge on your resume or do you actually have to place in the top 5/10 or get selected for stage 2 of the competition to put it on your resume?
