Cue - New Personal Health-Tracker

I recently came across this new health-tracker on the net:

FromTechCrunch:

This San Diego-based startup, which was founded back in 2009 in the midst of the swine flu peak and has attracted more than $1 million in backing from an undisclosed U.S. angel investor, is building a hybrid electronic-mechanical-chemical connected device that it says will enable people to quantify their health at a molecular level.

It enables you to detect influenza, see fertility trends and keep track of your testosterone, inflammation and Vitamin D levels by collecting samples from your body (e.g. saliva or droplets of blood) and inserting them into the cartiges. Then the device analyzes the sample and sends the results to the application via Bluetooth. It is definately a step forward from the step-tracking & heart rate-monitoring current fitness apps.

So, what's your view on Cue and the future of health-tracking products in general?
Also, do you know if any other companies are making simliar efforts? I am pretty sure that such start-ups would present extremely interesting opportunities for venture capitalists.

This is unbelievable. I can only imagine the applications technology will have in pervading all aspects of our life. As we begin to leverage its potential in other areas, personal fitness and health is one area that has tremendous room for growth. Just look at how much more health conscious the average consumer is now and you can tell that this will be an ongoing paradigm shift that several businesses and start ups will look to capitalize on.

This is very fascinating. I was also thinking about how this can decrease the amount of time a physician needs to care for common diagnoses - which in the Cue video, the physician just talked to the mother over video chat. I can't wait to see what the future will look like.

I'm with ya. Wait times at emergency rooms (see current VA investigation) and a shortage of primary care physicians is putting a massive strain on the health care system. New innovations like Cue should be very beneficial, and they can even partner with retail clinics (CVS, Walgreens, Walmart) to provide services for those common diagnoses. I definitely want to see what Cue does in the future.

love the concept, would like to see it track more things, but a solid start for sure. will be curious to see how HIPAA (privacy rules for patients), the insurance companies, and the FDA react to this. fitbit got into a bit of a pickle when they were sharing data about users' sexual activity.

I certainly hope that the insurance companies use a more sophisticated model, the sort of "pay for what you need" coverage that car insurance companies are trying. granted, this would jack up premiums for the obese, but I'm not obese so I don't care. if you could charge premiums based on overall level of health, there'd be a bigger incentive for people to lead healthier lifestyles, which means lower medical costs for everyone, less sick people, and overall a better country. traditional measures like BMI and smoker/non smoker are way too simple to be able to ascertain someone's level of health, but if something like this can change that, I'm all for it. if you go by BMI, Lindsey Lohan is in better shape than Adrian Peterson, just as an example.
