stayed a 3rd year going to PE

I've heard people say that staying for a 3rd year helps you get a better PE job, while others say the opposite. What is your take?

I don't think it necessarily does--but I joined a different group for my 3rd year to get more exposure, which I suppose didn't hurt. But I don't think being a 3rd year gives you a leg up necessarily.

So let's say you want to stay a third year. But of course there's the possibility that you won't get an offer for a third year, so you have to go and interview for other jobs. I'm guessing the firm finds out that you're interviewing for post-banking jobs, so don't you think they'll be more likely not to give you a third year offer then? Do you have to verbally tell them that you actually want to stay on a third year? How hard is it to get a third year offer? Do you have to be an absolute top analyst?

And when do you know if you'll be getting a third year offer? Do you usually have to go and interview for other positions just in case?

You actually get a formal offer, but if you aren't getting the fuck off annual bonus, then chances are you will get a 3rd year offer. I didn't interview for anything during my 1st/2nd year, because I thought about trying to run through banking. I got an offer to stay on as an associate, but decided to try buyside and if it doesn't work out, hell tons of banks need laterals.

Haha so what's the fuck off bonus? Are we talking the lowest possible bonus, or something middle of the road? If you're not a superstar but "average" compared to your peers, will you still get a 3rd year offer?
