David Fincher or Chris Nolan?

Who makes better movies out of the two?

Normally I would say Chris Nolan but having seen the new Girl With The Dragon Tattoo trailer (and his past work, Seven, Fight Club etc) its pretty difficult.

Thoughts?

Trailer for those who havent seen it!

craigmcdermott:
Nolan. His current run of films is unprecedented. Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Prestige, The Dark Knight, and Inception.

Nothing Fincher has directed is as good as TDK, The Prestige, or Inception and Nolan's body of work is better. No contest.

The Prestige was massively overrated. Agree on the rest.

Don't know about Fincher not directing anything as good. Fight Club is iconic, Social Network was fucking great, seeing as I had no expectations for it.

Its not as clear cut.

I would say that Fight Club and Seven were better than anything Nolan has done but I would give Nolan the edge because he has more good movies to his name.

Nolan's string is amazing. I can't think of any director who had more good movies in a row - Scorcese always had so-so movies in between his classics.

Fincher. Great style – even brought a lot to a film like the Social Network (whose screenplay could have just as well been adapted by Cameron Crowe).

Are you serious? The screenplay was gold. Aaron Sorkin is as consistent as they come i.e. West Wing, A Few Good Men, Charlie Wilson's War..

I'm not knocking the screenplay – ignoring the writing, Fincher brought an edge to the film that made the story more interesting, and honestly probably sexier than the actual founding of Facebook.

Anyway, here's something to finger yourself to:

Fincher has kind of fallen off since Zodiac whereas Nolan has been killing it the last 5 years. This being said, Seven and Fight Club are unbelievable and Inception's probably the only movie by Nolan I would put in the same category.

Zodiac was very good but dragged a little towards the end. Since then he killed it with Social Network and Benjamin Button, both terrific movies.

Inception and the Dark Knight are Nolan's strongest movies. Batman Begins and Insomnia a notch below.

Fincher has Seven, Fight Club, Social Network. Benjamin Button and Zodiac are a notch below that.

His new movie looks great.

Plus, I look at this way - Panic Room and The Prestige were each's respective weakest movies.

And Panic Room > The Prestige.
