Decided right after graduating as a premed that I want to enter into Finance
Hey everyone,
I'm 23 years old and just graduated this past May. I was preparing to apply to medical school and wanted to take one gap year before starting medical school, but I got back a lower than expected MCAT score. This meant that I would be taking at least two years off before starting medical school, assuming that I get accepted. I'm currently working in a research lab and there's a medical doctor who's been pushing me to try out a business related position, as he's involved in a biotech startup and wishes that he studied finance during undergrad.
A little about myself is that I've been interested in medicine since a young age, but I also became interested in business through trading stocks since 2014. My MD coworker, along with the fact that nearly all of my friends are in IB or consulting have made me become obsessed with getting into the business world in this last week.
I have no work experience related to business and only have the usual premed experiences. On my resume, I have that I'm a research technician that uses Excel and PowerPoint to analyze and present experimental data, a private tutor for the past 4 years, a technician in an ophthalmology office, a Mandarin interpreter for the Board of Elections, and a hospital volunteer. Here are my academic stats:
- NYU CAS - Global Public Health Major, Chemistry Minor
- GPA: 3.72, Cum Laude
- ACT: 34/36 (IDK if this is important)
Could any of you offer advice on what my best course of action would be to secure a reputable position in IB? I am open to other roles, but IB is the one that I'm most familiar with. I'm also fine with going anywhere in the country. I have read other posts about getting an MSF or MBA from a top business school and I would consider those options. I also just spoke to someone I took many premed classes with at NYU after finding out that he's on the hiring team of a mid-tier consulting firm. He said that he's willing to send in my resume with his referral. He received his full-time offer 6 months ago without any business experience. Would that be a good opportunity to pursue?
If you just graduated in this May then MBA after your medical research / consulting gig would be the most optimal (~3 to 4 years and then M7 MBA).
Even if you do Princeton / MIT Master in Finance, you have to 1. apply for the next year cycle 2. do 18 months there (you need to get SA after your first year, and then convert FT as BB/EB will absolutely not take full timers without solid IB experience) -> this will take at least 2.5 to 3 years as well. Better to gain experience in other specialized field, go to M7, and pivot to IB group that is healthcare or other specific niche and comes as associate. Just my 2 cents

Honestly, start networking ASAP - alumni, friends, family. You never know who is looking or what direction you may be guided in.
Try applying for healthcare focused consulting firms. Likely the easiest on ramp for you as finance looks for more finance oriented technical skills while consulting looks for interest and general intelligence. Doesn’t have to be a fantastic company, just get the experience and a smooth transition.
From there, branch out into other things. If you don’t find anything that is a step above after 1-2 years, go do an mba and then find whatever you want after that.
