Decision time - help me to make my life better

Hey folks,
I know you're probably sick of answering similar questions all the time, but I really don't know what to do and therefore I need to be helped. I want to pursue the career in accounting - something I truly like and I've always been good at. For the upcoming academic year I applied to two schools: Rotterdam School of Management and Stockholm School of Economics that offer courses in Accounting & Control and Accounting & Financial Management, respectively. As I was accepted to both schools I need to make a choice and what it worse I need to make it soon.

The most important criterium for me is future job opportunities. Frankly speaking, although I am from Europe, I would like to work on some other continent. I don't know how possible it is, but this is definitely my dream. I am currently in Canada and I love it here, I also love the States and Australia. Well, even London would work. But this is is just wishful thinking, let's get to the real questions.

Which programme do you guys consider to be better? Which do you reckon may provide better job opportunities, especially in the countries previously mentioned? To make it simple: which one should I go for?

I've been to Rotterdam and I know it's not really expensive to live there. I am also sure I would be able to finish the course with decent grades. On the other hand, I don't really like the city and I would obviously learn more in Sweden since it's a 2-year programme. However, I heard Stockholm is very expensive and since I come from the considerably low-income country and my family is not very wealthy (although it would be able to support me), I am afraid this may be an issue.

As you can see, lots of stuff, lots of questions. I'm really struggling to make a choice, each options has it ups and downs. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I have very limited knowledge of this, but perusing a few sites leads me to think Rotterdam. A few points:

  • If you're interested in the U.S. and Australia, not just Europe, Stockholm seems to feed more internationally; but, Rotterdam is certainly not a slouch in this department
  • Rotterdam seems to be more "prestigious," and seems to have a definite edge in Europe
  • Rotterdam alums look to be a bit stronger than @ Stockholm
  • As you pointed out, cost of living will be less in Rotterdam
  • Since Rotterdam is a shorter program, you can be in the working world more quickly; I also wouldn't necessarily say you will learn more at Stockholm just because it's a longer program

Anyway, I am not in the accounting industry so take my points with a grain of salt. Maybe it can serve as a jumping off point into more research, though.

Thanks a lot for your help.

From your post I can conclude that not only are both schools comparable, but RSM may be even a little bit better. Good point on the shorter programme - one more year of work means one more year of getting experience and getting money. I found your tips truly valuable, so again, thanks.

Any other thoughts?

Chase your dreams!

Hey dear, I may going to RSM as well, If you decided please let me know. : ) I have no idea about the RSM before, and since I am planning to come back to canada after MBA, it has been a big concern for me too. although RSM is a good school but RSM may not a compete the network of local schools. and RSM has very small group of alumni in North america. but compare with sweden`s?? Its really important which area are you going to work in the future. If you are going to work in finance and accounting area for instance, it is more important to have a local designation, MBA will be a title. Compare the timeframe and the cost, I prefer the RSM as its starts in JAN and you can complete within 12 month. and Netherlands has more mutinational companies than Sweeden has. so it will easy for you to access to company resources. I hope you already made a decision at this moment.
