When to Delete Social Media

Like most undergraduates, I’m on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. I used to have Twitter in high school but deleted it last year. I viewed it as a waste of time, same as most the others. The next one to go is inevitably Instagram, but while I’m still an undergrad, it helps with staying connected with friends and with girls. I was wondering when did you get rid of your different social media accounts, or do you still have them and never use them?

I have Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat.

Thinking of getting rid of Instagram. Snapchat proves its worth because you can be discrete on it (convos delete when you're done). It's great to use for hookups.

I was on Twitter for, like, 2 weeks last month. It is a vile cesspool. I am now off of it. Humanity is the worst.

Facebook is like f*cking crack cocaine. The newsfeed is the most brilliantly addictive non-drug invention perhaps in the history of mankind, and that's no exaggeration. I've had a half-dozen or so friends this year alone who have deactivated their accounts entirely because they can't use Facebook in moderation.

I'm not good looking enough for Instagram, so it would be an embarrassing ghost town if I had an account.

I can't quite Facebook for 2 reasons. First, all the online dating apps are connected to it, and second, the vast majority of my Facebook friends are liberals, and I just can't help myself.

Unfollow them. Takes a bit of work, but when you see nothing on your newsfeed but the Investment Banking Memes page, it feels refreshing and free.

GoldenCinderblock: "I keep spending all my money on exotic fish so my armor sucks. Is it possible to romance multiple females? I got with the blue chick so far but I am also interested in the electronic chick and the face mask chick."

I'm not on anything anymore.

I like it as it allows me to focus on my relationships in front of me and largely communicate by phone/text. A lot of younger chicks like to link up even in the bar on Facebook, and it can become slightly annoying. But, when chicks ask if we could be Facebook friends, I say I don't have Facebook and then we exchange digits. I've found that text is a much better medium for me in cultivating and maintaining close relationships.

I had thousands of photos, friends, data on FB that I was on from 2004-2016. It was cool at first especially in the mid to late 2000s. Initially it was seeing people link up, get crazy, go on cool trips, etc.

Then, for me at least, FB began to have a lot of static. A lot of fluff. People weren't posting every few days with some photos. They were updating statuses about the most mundane things. Then, that became the norm. Also, it began to become "Baby Facebook" for me at least. It was nothing but baby pictures. I don't have any issues against babies, but forreal people. My feed began to take shape as 'a day in the life of my child'. This is great and everything, but in essence it became me following my friends to following their extended family.

In the 2000s FB was great for massive invites, keeping up with parties, etc. Now, i'm pretty much content to rely on close friends texting me for events, etc. In some walks of life it is a pain. My MMA gym posts a lot of updates on FB and I asked them to put me on an email list and the girl that works there was just like 'oh sign up for Facebook, its free'. I don't want to get in a long spiel about it so I just say things like 'ok cool thanks.'

But mainly, I just like the focus. I've traveled all over the world, attended numerous schools, and living in big cities has resulted in thousands of link ups over the years. It was quite a lot of static on there for me and I feel much peace being away from it.

Very well said. I got rid of SnapChat, Instragram, Twitter, and Facebook in January and it feels amazing. No way I would get them again.

My man, you are definitely giving away your age when you say the younger chicks ask to be friends on FB.... it's definitely Instagram for my age group and the younger chicks I know are all about Snapchat although the trend to IG has been increasing....

I deleted the Facebook app off my phone and my productivity skyrocketed. It becomes apparent just how mindlessly often you use the app when you start counting the number of times when you search for it on your phone and realize you deleted it...

Find it pretty difficult to delete IG solely because of all the hot girls and because it's much easier to link up with girls you meet at bars and clubs through IG than even phone numbers.

I personally have found no regular use for snapchat (the earliest iteration of it years ago w/o the stories function seemed to be for insider traders and dick-pic-senders in my opinion) although I keep it around for when friends of mind go on cool vacations so I can follow what they're up to

Had Twitter twice over the last ten years, each time for a month.... it is a terrible platform where you're inundated with meaningless information and drivel... unless you're Trump or someone who can build a business/following off of it, do yourself a favor and get off

even i had twitter account on my high school after degree i never used that account few months back only i have check my account it has same followers and seen the updated version of twitter but still i did not deleted that account. another one Google Plus, it has only one time used i think, when i created account ha ha ha and still i never open that one moreover now only got know that account i created ha haaaa. thanks for the post.

I'd recommend starting with deleting these apps off of your phone. This way you can drastically cut down the amount of time you spend on them, if not altogether, and still keep your profiles in case you want to stay in touch with classmates / friends.

This is by far the best course of action and worked for me until I started opening a browser and going to facebook.com that way haha

I'm on LinkedIn and Twitter. They're the only useful ones. If you're using Twitter to tweet to your 50 followers what you're during at a certain moment or read your friends' tweets including Nietzsche quotes, then it's a waste of time. Twitter keeps me updated on news, like Feedly, but I can also interact with other users. I have connected with professionals in the field I want to work in and even received job offers.

Facebook and Instagram is for narcissists who have too much time on their hands.

ASMALLWORLD is the only social network I am looking to joining in the future. It is an exclusive social network that filters out plebs by not being free. To join, one must receive an invitation from an existing member, or an invitation from the governing board after filing an application to be considered for membership.

I'll take my Raya subscription, thank you.

I'm at about the point where I could delete Snapchat and live entirely off Instagram as my personal, social media platform. You get to a certain age where all of these micro-communications become trivial as opposed to necessary interactions given your demographic environment.

Ideally, I'll post a few, important Instagrams a year to keep a public presence and selfishly, as a time-capsule to look back on. Daily scrolls, throw likes on friend's content and show love to women of interest will continue.

Facebook is really only serving the purpose right now because of it's birthdays and events. Please port events over to Instagram in some form or fashion, because I've already figured out how to export Facebook birthdays. If that were to happen, I could make my account private for now until eternity with no qualms.

My LinkedIn serves as my digital resume that enables headhunters to reach out. The content is complete shit but It serves a purpose for now.

In sum: Slowly moving personal social presence entirely to Instagram, and LinkedIn serving as my public professional brand.

I've never had anything beyond Facebook. I can't bring myself to delete it because it would require even MORE effort on my part to keep up with my friends and network. I might actually have to call folks or go hang out with them. I'd rather not have to leave the house, so a simple "like" of a comment or photo will do.

And since I cut the cable, I get lots of real time news via FB. The site can be useful so long as you block any pointless updates from your newsfeed.

I have facebook for staying in touch with family, instagram for pictures, and snapchat for funny shit with friends. I see no need to delete any of them and really they don't waste much time.

I have Instagram and Snapchat. I hate Facebook, but of course I have one.

I enjoy spending time on them, and have had a number of hookups lead from those two apps. And I think it's all kind of fun, but maybe that's because I'm a college guy. I never get fear-of-missing-out anymore, just because I feel like I've had enough of my own interesting experiences, and so it's a good way to kill time. It'd probably be for the best to delete the apps, but it's not like, in the time I would be using those apps, that I would likely be doing anything else that's much more productive.

People that delete social media either do it to brag about deleting social media, thinking it somehow makes them better than others, or are just losers to begin with. If you spend that much time on social media that you seriously consider deleting it as a necessity, you have other problems than just social media.

Yeah totally disagree with this. These are multibillion dollar companies whose entire business model is predicated around getting you on their app for as long as possible. You can't fight an entire industry. I think it makes all the sense in the world to take steps to protect your free time and quality of life.

Deleting the FB app off your phone, for example, just makes you far less likely to spend time on it while allowing you to still have it and use it for small purposes.

I got rid of mine awhile back and it was like coming off of drugs. Do it for a month just so you can see how much other shit there is to do.

Def change privacy settings. At my old firm, the first thing the VP who chaired the recruiting committee would do is google a potential interview candidate and on more than one occasion he was leaning towards granting them an interview and their facebook profile pick killed it for them.
Hopefully the VP is internet savvy enough to actually find the right person (e-mail, school/geography filters, etc.). There's about 3 other American men with my name, and I wouldn't trust any of my superiors to find the right profile/news articles from Google.

I personally am against deleting facebook accounts to try and win employment. If you have pictures of you drinking, thumbs up... you'll be a fun candidate to get along with. If you have pictures of you running naked through a cornfield or doing a keg stand, just untag them for the time being. Having a typical college facebook never hurt anyone -- though naturally the advice to make things "friends only" is essential. So long as you have a "friends only" facebook and nothing completely embarrassing inside of it, you are good to go.

I'm not sure exactly what you guys mean by "delete", but you can deactivate your account, which is like a temporary delete. After you land the job, just log in with your email and pw to reactivate your account, and your profile will be the exact same as when you left (except for any changes that facebook implemented).

I would personally tend not to hire someone who doesn't have a facebook account. That sends out the wrong signals. What kind of a boring shit is this person? Does he have no friends? Those grades are no longer as impressive now that we know that he spends all the time studying. He is a terrible networker. I won't hire that fucking prick. Normal Facebook accounts with a decent pic, maybe with a drink in the hand or a hot blonde on the side, are winners.

Seriously, dude? Really? REALLY? Anyways, you can't always definitively determine whether a candidate has an account or not b/c it could be hidden b/c of strict privacy settings. So do you plan on demanding that every candidate log into their fb account during the interview to prove it?

No Facebook = red flags...When you delete it people tend to think (rightly or wrongly) what is this person hiding?

You cant assume someone doesnt have a facebook account just because you cant find it. Alot of people, especially attractive girls who dont want to be stalked or get 50 friend requests per day, will not use their real name on their facebook account. Also, I think most people have seperate work and social emails, so the email on a resume wont necessarily help. I check facebook accounts of perspective hires, but I have a pretty high bar for it effecting my decision-making...ie the kid would have to have something really stupid up there for me to care. And I definitely wouldnt discriminate against someone just because they didnt have an account.

I personally took down my facebook account recently because it was fairly generic and wasnt a good representation...several times I have been talking to girls at bars/clubs and they will facebook me on their phone right there while Im talking to them! So I basically need to spend a few minutes to get that page looking good before I put it back up...

I don't even think it makes sense for employers to search you through Facebook anymore. Reason being, the search engine fucking sucks, and there's no way anyone will be able to find you after sifting through 300 other people with the same name as you. It's not like before, where you could search someone and the relevant person came up in the top 3 results or so.

HarvardOrBust, you just enter the email address and you're good to go. As I said, I would always make sure that the email address you use is also your facebook address. In my example, there is a big douche with the exact (rare) name as I have. He's got cheap "playa" pics with one of those fake Gucci sunglasses. I have contacted him multiple times asking him to remove his profile. I think I might dole out big bucks to help him with this decision. Also, if you really want to find someone, you always will. Even if you've only talked to a random hot chick for like 20 minutes even in a foreign place, you will always have enough information to find that person.

my MM firm checks Facebook to see if a candidate has any pictures of themselves on the cape. Picture of you on Nantucket with your sailboat=Automatic In!

Also several of the MD's ding all colored applicants or anyone that takes pics with minorities or lists rap as his or her fav music. Most of our analyst hires this year came from traditional Wasp schools like Howard and Morehouse.

Seems like the general consensus is that it is "cool" to delete your facebook. I'd liken this to gothic kids bragging about being "non-conformist"... I actually quite enjoy mindless social time-wasting. Maybe I really get a kick out of living vicariously through people who have never heard of a zero-coupon bond & seeing pictures of little Johnny's first frat party, but I'd like to think it keeps me somewhat sane
