Dept of Justice sues school district

http://www.newser.com/article/d9k3bvug1/us-sues-s…

So apparently a Muslim school teacher in Chicago was twice denied a 3 week absence from school to pray at Mecca. I guess she made some noise so the Dept of Justice decided to pick it up and run with it claiming it was a breach on her civil rights and sued the school district.

What do you guys think? I'm all for freedom of religion but not when it hurts others: in this case the children. Also 3 weeks is a bit excessive. More importantly, doesn't this open the door for people who want to take mini-vacations in the name of religion??

A bit absurd in my book. a) Why 3 weeks? 1 week isn't long enough? b) Why sue? What's the point of litigation here? Slap them with a fine or something, don't drag it through the media. c) Are there not substitute teachers around? Why deny the request in the first place, or simply mandate a shorter timeframe, altogether preventing this publicity mess.

Agree with all three. Not an expert in Islam, but it seems like the Hajj takes 5-7 days. Throw in transit time and a secondary pilgrimage to Medina and two weeks should be sufficient.

If the leave is unpaid, I don't see what the issue is. If she is requesting paid leave, then TS to her.

I find this sickening. She is a teacher, teacher's get the ENTIRE FREAKING SUMMER OFF. Don't go on your Hajj during the school year. Also -- she joined in 2007 (fall no doubt) and asked to go in 2008. She had MAYBE 1 full academic year of teaching behind her. She isn't exactly a tenured professional.

I've been in the workforce for nearly four years now and I've taken a grand total of about three weeks off.

How was the Hajj dude?

The Hajj cannot be done over the summer -- something to do with the Islamic lunar calendar.

3 weeks is unreasonable. Not everyone makes the trip to Mecca. You are supposed to, at least once, but very few Muslims can do it every single year. This chick is just a pain in the fucking ass.

This is political correctness gone wild. The only good thing about the story is that it happened in Chicago, the fucking liberal snake pit of this country.

Can we put Chicago in California and then detonate a nuke on the San Andreas fault line?
