Desk software developer at prop trading

Hi everyone, i have a friend who works in a well known prop trading company. He says he has two software developers working on his desk and they get part of PnL as well. He said they know business very well and could easily become traders if they wanted. Anyone knows, how true is that? What software developers on a desk really do? My friend said they are not quants, are they just ordinary developers? How difficult is it to get one of these jobs?

A little bit about myself. Graduated from non target uni, working as developer in top US bank, very interested in switching to prop trading developer role these days and then hopefully trading itself.
