Diabetic on the job
Hi all - I'm new in S&T. I'm also a type 1 diabetic. While I keep my A1C in good check, I have the occasional low/high blood sugar swing. Being on a sales desk, I worry that at some point having low blood sugar will impact my ability to think straight and I may misquote a large trade or otherwise do something incoherent. Are there any others in S&T with diabetes (most specifically type 1) who have tips for newcomers on the job? By the nature of the position I need to be sharp and detail-oriented, so any tips on how to maintain clear-headedness despite the internal homeostatic rollercoaster of diabetes would be much appreciated! E.g. are there queues you use with your team to get off the desk when you need to raise your blood sugar?
More broadly I think this would be a good opportunity to start a best practices/tips section for us diabetics. Sometimes I need to remind myself I have to pay special attention to my body to maintain performance, so any tips from seasoned veterans would go a long way. Thanks in advance and good luck, all!
