Did anyone see crazy rich asians?
It is doing very well in theaters (at the top of the box office) and has great reviews. Some are saying that this proves the power of diversity - about 38% of opening weekend ticket buyers were Asian, and this is the best a PG13 romcom has done at the box office since "Think Like a Man," which starred an all-black primary cast.
If you saw it, what did you think? Does it live up to the hype?
Mediocre
what I figured
Waiting for it to come out on Netflix or Amazon Prime. I don't take the time/money to see comedies in theatres.
Didn't see crazy rich asians or blackpanther, nor did I see any other movie all year or last year. I don't remember the last time I paid money to sit in a movie theater
I don't know anything about these movies, beside the media playing up the race stuff
However as an adult with way to much shit going on, a movie - let alone a comic book movie & a rom-com - is the last thing I would seek for entertainment
You don't know anything about black panther besides his race? Someone didnt watch cartoons as a kid.
I didn't watch the black panther or read the comic books as a kid, no
& you know what I'm saying re:media talking about race
It was the first Disney marvel superhero movie with a majority black cast and the BP universe tackles issues around colonialism etc. I swear, some of you just want to whine. Your post wasn't even about either movie it was written just to whine about the media and race.
p.s. whoever MSed me can fk off
Marvel sucks and BP is trash. Whole comic book series into movie blows.
I did not see the movie (saw "Think Like a Man" on DVD, highly recommend)
Without seeing the movie, I'm a little dismayed, specifically by the title and concept. Specifically, the way it's titled. Also, with an all Asian cast this is the best story to tell? It seems whatever stereotypical, almost racial.
Going back to Think Like a Man, it's a funny movie, because its funny. It isn't dependent on racial humor, or plays to any stereotypes. The cast is mainly black, but it could have been any race.
The movie is based on a novel.
I get that and I know that.
What I mean is, its been 25 years since The Joy Luck Club, and this is the best story that can get filmed regarding Asian Americans?
I feel that would be like if a landmark black film was made 25 years ago, and the first film someone made out the gate today was like "Madea Buys a Car".
As least remake the book "Bringing Down the House" and don't white wash it first.
Don't really watch rom coms but my gf does, will probably watch it when it's available on streaming platforms.
Movie in itself is eh but I appreciate the sentiment and the idea. Was fun to watch with friends, but mainly because of the experience.
Shameless plug here but I'd instead recommend Abacus for my folks looking for a compelling storyline - also centered around an Asian-American family.
I thought it was great movie with one of those cliche happy endings. It was different. I wouldn’t mind watching more all Asian cast movies.
Very enjoyable experience (I am not a fan of romcoms in general so I would not watch it again, though it has nothing to do with the movie in itself).
Biggest complaint I had was that the writing quality of the movie took a nosedive during the ending. Totally nonsensical.
Everything else leading up to it was solid for what it was trying to accomplish in squeezing a trilogy within a single movie. Like all movie adaptations, it unfortunately was unable to explore other character arcs besides the main one; incidentally I actually found the main secondary couple having a better buildup in their conflict by the end of the movie. But whatever.
Movie was still fun. I want more Asian cast movies as well that highlights other Asians besides Chinese people. Although I have been told the Cantonese in the movie was pretty much terrible. But I didn't grow up knowing Cantonese so I had no idea.
so we got the same story line: young guy is rich as fuck, wants to fuck a poor girl but parents are against - wow i guess i have seen 10x movies like this playing in NYC (no porns!)
now, the only difference is that the protagonists are Asians, plot is playing in Asian; same story as above and everybody is calling "diversity" "great movie"- what a stupid world we are living in.
LOL WHAT.
That aside, I agree with this sentiment. It's just another rom-com. Before seeing the trailer, I interpreted the title to mean it was a movie about rich Asians in general. This is just another romance fantasy, but now for every ABC girl who got dumped in favor of a girl from the mainland. Same story, different spin. Great that it was an all-Asian cast, for sure, but less symbolic than people think. It just means we're in a time where mainstream movies can be about Asian people - no different than Friday in the 1990's.
While I like movies getting more diverse, I get mildly-annoyed as reviews scores are inflated for movies that are going viral not because it's an outstanding movie but because of the progressive casting/plot. It's annoying when everyone is saying a movie is amazing, and then I find out it's just a very basic genre flick.
The obvious example is Black Panther; it's a very middle-of-the-pack Marvel movie, meaning a 2.5 - 3 star film. My friends whose opinions are guided by twitter would say to me "why haven't you seen it yet? It's the greatest superhero movie ever!" even though I haven't seen a Marvel movie since Iron Man.
I don't know anything about this movie though; hopefully it truly deserves the praise it's receiving.
I saw BP, I thought it was a solid 8. Imo, it's one of the better films in the Marvel universe (although the first GotG is still my favorite). Your assumption that these movies are getting good reviews simply b/c they "go viral" is just that, an assumption. Maybe you didn't enjoy BP that much and that is fine, no need to rush to the conclusion that reviewers who did like it enjoyed it simply because of diversity.
