Did I lie on my resume? What to do at this point?
I met a finance journalist, Bob, for X magazine through alumni connections. And we ended up working on a project together. This was a side project, so I normally don't put it on my resume but it was relevant for a specific position.
So, I wrote down that I worked for X magazine under Bob on my resume. I made sure to include his name in case they wanted to verify with him. But in retrospect - writing that I worked for X magazine was somewhat misleading because X magazine never hired me.
Moreover, a background check would turn up that I did not worked there because it was unofficial. While Bob would confirm I did what was on my resume, I am worried I would get dinged without the chance to refer HR to him.
I already did one interview.
Should I email HR ASAP and explain the situation? What do I say?
I'd email Bob and ask him how he suggests listing on a resume.

Though as for this specific opportunity...how would I word the correction to HR?
Even if it is a long-shot they'd let it slide, I'd like to at least try to remain competitive.
I wouldn't stress too much depending on what you wrote for the project. The project was ultimately for the company/Bob correct? Assuming that you didn't state that you worked on different things for the company and pertained it to the truth, I'd think you're fine.
Lastly, they'd likely go through you to get to him to confirm anything, so if you're asked for a reference in that aspect, then you'd provide his information to them (or the firm that it's outsourced to). Most importantly, speak with him and ask about how to best portray it and do that moving forward, when applicable. You can't change the current situation so I wouldn't waste time worrying about it, just play it smart.
Thanks bankerboy. Everything I wrote was truthful. Hell, I have all of my research and deliverables I can send. Going forward, I will certainly speak with him about how best to communicate it.

No. You risk HR misunderstanding what you say and bring more scrutiny/attention to your overall resume. If asked, clarify. If references are requested, give them. There's no need to dig a hole for yourself any further though by confusing them with information.
