Career Resources
Some similar work in terms of analysis but at different sides of the table. At a M&A consulting firm you usually consult a party on which deal might be better or alternatives. Consultants also might work with the board of directors. M&A in investment bank is pure selling deals. I never worked in either but know people who did.
Consutling M&A vs Investment Banking M&A (Originally Posted: 08/09/2013)
I am currently a junior studying finance and am in the process of deciding what career path to take. I am particularly interested in Mergers and Acquisitions.
Can someone please go into details about the differences between working in the M&A practice of a consulting firm vs. the M&A group at an Investment Bank?
Thank you!
I think that consulting firms will help companies form strategies that may lead to acquisitions, but I have yet to see a consulting firm actually advise on an actual deal. That's when the banks step in.
Consulting firms very frequently advise on deals. McKinsey has been on both of the deals I've worked most extensively on. Almost always, the banks are told to use the assumptions provided by the analysis done at the consulting firms for the models.
Please be aware that M&A is very broad in itself and has various stages. MBB will most likely get the strategy work to identify targets, etc and as EarLoab suggested, can also advise on the deal as well. A lot of other consulting companies will step in post M&A, or during M& A integration (i.e. IT integration, people & Change, operations etc.) all those areas that aren't as finance-heavy are still considered M&A, so just be careful.
Difference between M&A consulting and investment banking in M&A (Originally Posted: 11/17/2015)
Hi
I want to understand the difference between the job of an M&A consultant and an investment banker working on an M&A deal.
Essentially what would be the difference in roles between a consultant at Deloitte and any investment bank, say, JP Morgan.
Thank You
