Dilemma : London or Paris

Hello everyone,

I am French, and my English is not perfect and I have to make a decision. I will be doing a summer internship within a BB in London in 2019, and my goal is to get a graduate programme. Moreover, I have to do a 6-month internship from January 2019 to June 2019 as part of my studies (so just before the summer).

My dilemma is: where should I do my 6-month internship? In London, as it will allow me to improve my English and to learn IBD vocabulary? Or in Paris, as it is reallllllly easier to get a 6-month internship there, and I will probably get a better brand name (but I won't learn English)?

I hope it's not too confusing

London. I do not think you'll get better brand in Paris if your goal is to work in finance. Paris isn't exactly a top hub for finance, whereas London joins the ranks of NYC and Hong Kong as a de-facto seat of the industry. Paris won't kill you, but I think this decision is a no-brainer.

Thanks a lot for all your clear answers! I will focus on London. But imagine this scenario: I have an offer within an unknown M&A boutique in London (with 10 employees) and another offer within SocGen/BNP in Paris, what would you advise me to choose in order to convert the summer into a graduate). Thanks in advance

Agreed. In this case I'd go with the bigger brand. But as below, it's up to you where you'd like to end up and only you know how much value you think you can squeeze from a tiny shop. Me being you, however, I'd go with the bigger brand. Safety is very valuable over a long timeline, and a BB internship in your junior year provides a whole lot of it (network, brand, cash, experience, etc.).

Where do you eventually want to work?

Also working in England will definitely help your language skills improve and seeming as you have a intern at a BB in London that will help you get a return offer compared to working in France which will not. If you take into account that at both you will essentially do the same thing but at a small team you will get more exposure and responsibility as long as you are not crap could also benefit. If you have a a summer stint at a BB it doesn't really matter what you have before tbh in terms of name.
