'Dilute Sample' Drug Test
Since almost everyone in Finance will take a whiz quiz at least once, I thought that this was pretty relevant.
Back in 2014, Josh Gordon (WR in Cleveland at the time) had a suspension placed on him for testing positive for marijuana use. He gave 2 samples for the test; one was just under the limit, and the other was just over. His legal defense claimed that he had been around someone else who was smoking, which is why he tested positive. Since a growing number of college students either smoke or live with someone who does, I thought that there was a chance that this could happen to kids either interning or in their early 20's, and the answer would be to detox (namely drink a lot of water) before a drug test if you've been around second hand smoke.
On Monday, Schefty from ESPN broke that Jabrill Peppers (DB/LB/S from Michigan) tested positive for a 'dilute sample' which essentially means that he drank too much water before the combine, and the NFL is treating it as a failed drug test. He has to enter the NFL's drug program and his draft stock might (will?) drop even though he did not test positive for any banned substances.
If either of these scenarios would happen to someone in banking, **how screwed would they be?** If you tested for second hand smoke or a dilute sample, **are you getting your offer pulled?**
There's always the possibility (probability for Gordon) that they had smoked, but I'm just thinking of how frustrated I would be if I had an offer rescinded because I drank too much water.
Fun fact I played against and tackled jabrill in high school. Def got my face ran over a solid amount though.
I saw Paramus play in 2013, I personally thought Shanley was the best player on the team but I don't believe he amounted to anything in college. Jabrill was definitely amazing, though.
2013 was my senior year haha. Which game are you referring to? I played for Bergen Catholic.
I'm from Paramus, and watching Jabrill play live in high school was amazing. He's an athletic freak
This actually happened to me a few weeks ago. Went out Thursday night and had a drug test the next day. Drank a lot of water the next morning to recover - nothing crazy, just the normal amount I drink the day after going out. Got an email from HR the next week saying my sample was diluted, but they just had me take another test within 24 hours.
Second hand smoke would likely be a different story.

If you drink a shit ton of water and your pee is crystal clear, will you fail a drug test or will they just retest you the next day?
You get a diluted sample and have to redo it.
The same day or the next day?
It can be the same day - they have the ability to test the ph right after you piss in the cup
Had this happen to me. The lab tech said they probably couldn't get a reading from it but they sent it in to the lab anyway. When it came back as too diluted it was reported to HR and they re-issued the drug screen so I had another 5-7 days or something like that
Do you guys know if companies test for shrooms? And if so, do companies need to give you at least one days' notice before testing you? I don't do any drugs (except shrooms) and even shrooms I haven't done in a year but I love them and really wanna do them over the summer again (and they only stay in your system for 1-3 days so if I took them on Saturday I'd have only one day of risk) and know they are rarely tested but don't wanna risk losing an offer over shrooms.
I asked this in the real estate forum but am very paranoid about it and wanted to get investment bankers perspectives on this too.
No, you're good. Psilocin/psilocybin are way too esoteric for a cheap 5 panel or 7 panel urine test. Don't think you'll get any false positives.
Dude just buy a Qcarbo from GNC or Amazon. Chug it like 2 hours before the test and take a B-Vitamin. It gives you like a 6-hour window legit mask. Worked for me.
Ok. The thing is I don't even know if I have a drug test or when it would be. My company just said that they may drug test and on the minuscule chance that they test the Monday after I tripped I'm nervous I'd get caught. It's basically a 0.00001% chance I'd get caught but if I do I'm 1000% fucked.
You'd be screwed in the first case and probably just have to retake in the second case. As an analyst, you are bringing almost no worth to the bank, whereas an NFL player is, at the very least, bringing ticket and jersey sales with him, so the amount of leverage you have for failed drug tests is pretty much zero.
I had the second scenario happen to me at the job I currently have. Lab Corp took forever to see me, and I couldn't hold it anymore, so I went to the bathroom. I came back and started drinking so that I'd be ready whenever they called me. Well, turns out I drank too much water, so my test showed up as dilutive. HR had no issue with this and just had me retake the next week.
In the case that you do test positive for something, does HR just pull your offer right then and there?
I don't know as I've never had this happen, but I imagine you'd get dinged.
I had offers rescinded for background check shit. They just send you a formal email and a copy of the results and how you can dispute them.
I strapped my wife's (gf at time) pee inside a condom to the inside of my leg with a hot muscle patch and put a safety pin in my sock. Worked great
I imagine you'd get your offer pulled. As for the tests themselves, there's a bit of a mechanism built in to determine the difference between second hand/primary smoke. I was worried about this a while ago (roommate smokes inside constantly, I don't smoke, would've sucked to fail on his bad etiquette) and did some research.
Most drug tests look for a given substance at a test level and then at a verification level. For example, when you get your piss tested, they may look for THC at a level of roughly 15 ng/ML. If you test positive there, before the lab would report you, they'd test you at 5 ng/ml - the verification level. The point here is just to reduce false positives, not identify second hand vs primary smoke, but it sort of serves that purpose.
Either way, just don't smoke for a few weeks. It's an idiot test, not a big deal. They're guaging that you can stop smoking long enough to appear professional.
I'm confused on this test level/verification level. Wouldn't it make sense to test the second time at a higher level?
No. Second tests are more specific - to make sure it's not a false positive. Basically the lab hedges itself this way against any issue
Jabrill Peppers also drank 8 bottles of water before his drug test. I think that's the more fishy part especially he could be hiding his usage of performance enhancing drug instead of just some ganja.
