Disclose a DUI?
I was charged with a misdemeanor DUI in early 2008. I was pulled over for expired tags and arrested for DUI.
I received an offer letter recently and never met with any HR personal or filled out any applications. All my interviews were with the team and no one asked indirectly or directly about criminal history. It actually never crossed my mind until I received the offer letter.
I think I have three options:
1. Call HR and disclose the DUI now
2. Call the head of the team now and disclose to him
3. Not say a word and be prepared to talk about it
I have not lied about anything and had the issue come up I would have talked about it. I actually wish I had the opportunity to disclose it on an application.
Any advice?

Definitely 3.
Ya, if it hasn't come up and no one has asked, just leave it alone. You would be surprised how many people have been arrested for DUI, it isn't as uncommon as you might think.
Have you heard of the TMI syndrom? TMI stands for TOO MUCH INFORMATION. So 3, but briefly and straight to the point, not making excuses.
I am in the DUI club. Kind of funny, when I came home, instead of getting screamed at by my parents, they were like welcome to the club. Apparently pretty much everyone in my family has one.
Anyway, are you sure that the application never asked if you have been arrested or convicted of a crime?- Every bulge bracket I have seen has that question in some form on the application. GS will definitely reneg your offer if you say no and it comes up on the background check. It will come up on the background check they run, and you will have to answer some uncomfortable questions in HR.
You have the offer, they are not going to rescind it because you have a DUI. They might rescind it because you didn't disclose it though. Then again, its unclear to me as to where you are in the process- you said you filled out an application, but generally they don't starting asking about criminal history until after the offer letter has been signed- its part of the onboarding process, so you may not have to make any phone calls yet.
In other news, I hate taking drug tests. Not because I am afraid I am not going to pass, I get stage fright every frickin' time I have to piss in a cup no matter how much coffee and water I drink beforehand and the nurse/secretary or whatever never have any sympathy for you. They treat you like you are some damn druggie on probation. Oh... and last time, I think I overdid it- I actually had the runs like a mother fucker and blew up the bathroom something fierce. I actually enjoyed the look on the bitchy nurse's face when she went in there to inspect the bathroom after I was done.
It's not an I-bank, it's an asset mgmt firm (sorry.... should probably post somewhere else)
I never filled out an application. My first correspondence with anyone from HR was after all my interviews with the team when HR emailed me the official offer letter. Again, there was never a direct opportunity for me to disclose. It didn't come up in any interviews, I never filled out an application, and I never thought of the DUI until now.
Is DUI misdemeanor? My state it isn't on a criminal record (unfortunately I know this from experience, though I was high not drunk)
My DUI is a misdemeanor
Thanks for the opinions.
definately 3,
if u get offer, it will ask you on your background check, if you disclose, im sure it wont be too much of an issue, except that if you have 2 or more its an automatic disqualifier. And as mentioned above if you do not disclose and the background check flags it, you will be done.
Trailmix8,
my offer letter says the terms of the agreement are subject to a background check. Are you saying that after I sign the offer letter and return it, they will likely have me sign a background check form which will provide me an opportunity to disclose?
Thanks
Hi, what happened next? Did you get the job? Did you get to disclose it when you sign the background task or you contacted HR personnel at the moment you accepted the offer before they start running their background check?
DId you seriously bump a 3 year old thread? If you disclose something like a DUI in advance of the background check you'll be fine--it's not a huge deal.
Hi fusiondogg, Thank you very much for your information. I have disclosed the dui in application. I was tols by hiring manager that i will get my offer letter next week. I am wondering if i should contact hr to remind them about my disclosure of dui on my application before they conduct the background check on me? Mine is also 1st misdeneanor in dui. I drove home under influence after dinner with ex colleagues. Thanks a mi.

I have a dui ticket and a fake id ticket on my record. I was convicted of the dui, but the fake id ticket was dismissed. I was recently extended an offer, and submitted information so they could conduct a background check (ssn, dl#, etc..). I have not been asked to disclose past convictions yet, but I know that being up front is the best policy in this situation. Should I:
Thanks.
what'd u do?
