Do extracurriculars matter post-college?
Okay, hear me out. Do extracurriculars matter when you already have a couple of years of FT experience and are recruiting for higher positions? Do you get an "exemption" if you work FT and study at the same time?
I work FT (hours are okay), study for postgrad, and have only one decent extracurricular (teaching finance at Coursera, gave guest lectures at uni), and someone told me that this is not enough. Is that really so? Really confused at this point.
Honestly, not really. Once you hit the desk, your performance is the most important aspect.
Well if by extracurriculars you mean being a side teacher or posting on a university newspaper, it doesn't matter, companies are not judging your general commitment like this once you work a serious job FT. But if you want to engage in business-related activities like being a startup advisor, an angel investor or trading stocks on your own, this is definitely valuable (but optional). So depends on what you do.
On the other hand, fit is really important and firms do assess you on your personality so if you want to double down on your hobbies i.e. picking up skydiving, becoming a BJJ Black Belt or learning to speak Chinese and Spanish fluently, fuck yeah it matters.
.
For jobs? Have never heard of them mattering except to the extent that they might make you a more interesting person and therefore have things to talk about with your interviewers. Business schools look at them, so if you plan to do an MBA then it is good to be involved in things outside of work.
OP doesn't even have to find an extracurricular, he can just put on his resume "Wall Street Oasis contributor"
