Do I have a chance Looking for honest appraisal

I'm new to the forum, and am basically looking for an honest appraisal as to my chances of landing a decent (I know, it's a subjective word) job doing either equity research or Asset Management in NYC- or, more specifically, Wall Street.

I've been working in corporate finance for a fortune 100 company for the last 14 months and am planning on attempting to make the switch in early 2011. At this point I will have aprox. 2 years of work experience.

A little background info:

  • Not from a target school. As a matter of fact, not from a well known school at all.
  • Decent GPA (3.3) in Finance with minors in economics and German. No SAT score.
  • Significant extracurriculars during and post undergrad.
  • Taking and passing L1 of the CFA this June.

I'm not sure the hours of either of these jobs I mentioned could possibly be worse than what I'm working now so I am not worried about that, but rather my prospects given my profile. I have got to get out of corporate finance!

What are my chances? Will a boutique at least give me a chance?

1) why no SAT score 2) no one gives 2 shits about your extracurriculars anymore

that said, i would hire you without a doubt for equity research. i would be willing to pay good money for your fortune-telling powers as evidenced by your ability to predict passing the CFA 3 months in the future.

aside from that, you should strongly consider b-school if you want to get into a good firm. depending on what you currently do, you have to realize that there are many college juniors out there with more related experience than you from target schools with good SAT scores, many also with really good GMAT scores. they are going to have summer internships with these firms and the good ones will get FT offers. the ones at really good firms that dont get FT offers after their internships will most likely get FT offers from the lower-ranked firms next season and so on.

going to a good b-school will make the transition much easier, you won't start at the absolute bottom, and you will also have the alumni network that will allow you to make contacts at some of the top firms.
