Do I have a chance in Investment Banking ?
I am a Masters of Finance senior at the Stuart school of business. I have a 3.3 GPA and I have experience working at EY and Wintrust Financial. I am also the president of a student-run equity fund at my school, I competed in the McGill Portfolio Challenge and the CFA competition. Do I have a chance to in investment banking or is my GPA too low?
and what else can I do to increase my chances of getting a job in investment banking?
Yes, you have. Highlight your extracurriculars in CV.
is it essential to take the CFA level 1 too?
Lol no don't bother with that. The CFA won't make a difference in your situation. The only way you're getting in, and I know I sound harsh but I'd rather be blunt and let you know all of the challenges upfront, from a no-name school with a bad GPA is through networking. Spend every possible minute you have reaching out to people. Every BB and EB will probably be off the table due to your school and your GPA (you can pick one, bad school but great GPA = chance, target school but bad GPA = chance, both = no shot). Reach out to boutiques and maybe some MM firms. Once you have your foot in the door you can lateral to a better place if you're a high performer. I know plenty of people who started out a a no-name regional boutique but made the move to a well-known MM firm. From there, it's possible to make the move again and go up the ladder. Your GPA and school matter way less once you're in, so you habe to focus on getting in.
Thank you for your honesty. I still have 2 semesters left at my school, I will try my best to raise my GPA.
